pod filters Wed, 02 July 2003 14:52 Go to next message
hey guys funny-ish story and a bit of a heads up for ppl who might find themselves in the same situation.....

my brother just did a engine converion (3L quad cam V6 turbo into a previously non turbo 2L silvia) after killing the stock turbo in the tuning process he upgraded to a trust tdo6. 2 days after re-tuning the car it lost all boost. he drove home popped the bonnet and gave a few revs... no boost and wouldnt go past 3000rpm and wierd metal scraping noise from turbo, kicked the car and went to bed. next day pulled apart the intake thinking hed killed a $2000 turbo and discovered the problem.... he'd used the old cheapie pod filter from the old engine and the suction from the turbo had pulled it apart!!! there was a bit of metal wedged against the compressor housing which was blocking the airflow, hence no boost or high revs. lucky for the size of the bit of metal an the compressor inlet or it would have went in and this story wouldnt have a happy ending!.

needless to say he is going to buy an expensive, brand-name, made for turbo cars, air filter asap!

Hahaha... That reminded me of a story I heard about a dude that took off the airbox and the stock piping to the throttle body... He then got a piece of flyscreen and clamped it onto the opening of the throttle body, gave it a rev and *poof*, the flyscreen was now in the plenum chamber and became close mates with a valve Laughing Laughing Laughing ...

pod filters are fukt

next time u get one look thru the foam into the sky
u can fit a 2 mm rock thru some of the holes

best thing to run if u have the room is the standard paper aircleaner

i know a gtr with 450 hp runnin std nissan paper cleaner

also with std airbox u dont get as much hot air into the engine

i dont klnow y some people waste money on other filters
unless they have limited room

i know some aftermarket filters cost 300 bucks and i dont think u get 300 dollars worht of hp power improvements

all u get is a louder suckion noise

i like to use k & n for aftermarket filters causae they still stop the tiny dust molecules better than foam ones

no way!
best thing to do is jap drag racer style air filter.

remove the entire ait filter and piping, then put some coarse (15mm) wire mesh over the hole.

that way you keep out the major problems, like birds and other small animals.

yeah the old stocking is workin fine for now! i heard that pod filters are all illegal unless they are in a box anyway? so it kinda defeates the porpose... he cant get it engineered yet cos he needs to put on the gtr brakes but they wont fit under the wheels hes got!

on a side note, what do i do for a filter on mine? im using the sr20 out of my brothers car into my ta22 if i dont want to use a pod filter what other options have i got? do places sell standard-type air filter boxes? or a wrecker maybe?
