what the title says.
Any tips on finding a good complete engine what should i look for specifically in an 18rg. is there anything i can check if i cannot start the engine.
i will be looking for an engine suitable for rebuild otherwise i will get a fully rebuilt one.
thanks

first thing, look for missing parts, if anything is missing it will be difficult to find a replacement.
check the chain tensioner, ie. lift the cam cover and have a good look at chain tension and every thing under there.
turn the engine with a wrench. You should hear some good gas flow around the valves and througn the ports. It may help to take the plugs out for the first couple of turns to loosen it up without too much energy.
Ask why it is not in a car now if it is a private sale, most people with them need a good reason to take them out.
if it doesn't have an intake manifold, look for corrosion around the three water ports on the intake side.
I am sure there are other things, but my brother got one that looked shit and was incomplete but when we opened it up it looked like it was almost a recon (minus the chain dampers, which were shit except for the tensioner slipper).

what steve said
it took me ages to find the bits that were missing of my first GU... seems to be intake manifold and cams, i dont know why
also check the oil, usually if theres good fresh oil in there it USUALLY means that the engine has been looked after, look around PCV valves for oil excess usually means increased blow-by, conpression test... all that stuff is good...
but you really cant be picky when trying to buy an 18R-G, they're getting fairly rare nowadays - decent ones that is

yeah i had a look at one today that had its rings and bearings done. i could have got it for 700 cash but i probably would have only bought it for 450.
it ran fine but...
i suspect it had a blown head gasket (virtually certain).
the water pump rotor snapped and was replaced (wierd)
it was rough at idle (it was susposedly stock)
it ran a little hot
the radiator coolant was dirty
there was hardly any flow through the radiator
and there was either what seemed like a fuel problem or valve bounce at 6400rpm it would NOT rev past that.
am i being too critical
i was thinking 400 for a complete motor to be rebuilt or 1000-1200 for a recently fully rebuily one.
is this unrealistic?
thanks

while were on about 18R-G's i' have a 18R-GU sitting in the shed for a while and the cams and tensioners all look pretty good the manifolds look good , but it seems i don't have some of the external pollution gear for it . is this stuff likely hard to get and do i even really need it?

most people dont put the pollution gear on anyway because
1. its so old it has stopped working
2. it never did much anyway
unless your in the nazi state you wont need all the crap.
wanna sell the engine to me?

The roughness at idle would have been due to the blown head gasket. Due a compression test to confirm this.
The only reason a pump shaft snaps is because either the pump bearing 'froze' or the impeller jammed with soooo much crap.
Sounds like the block (water jackets) are full of crap. This would be an indication that the motor hasn't been running distilled water and inhibitor. Chances are the head would be badly corroded too.
Don't expect the 18RG to rev much past 6400 with standard valve springs. Mine valve bounces about that, just means time to get the next gear
I would stay well clear of that 18RG. Unless you picked it up for $200 or something. But it sounds like a another rebuild would be required.
In my opinion a good running 18RG would be around $600 to $800 and a rebuilt one $1200 to $1500. From experience I know that they aren't cheap to rebuild. I am sure other people on this forum have probably found the same thing.

Raidator is probally clogged up from crap. Flush it out and the block at the same time. If it ran hot dah think no raidator flow ?? might be that the thermostat is farked 6400 out of a 18RG pretty good id say. Valve bounce isnt something u want to hear and if the engine cuts out at high revs ie. no fuel....well put that down to experaince
Stick clear of crappy engines like that.. it might sound good in theory but in reality they wont be that good. neeeds new head gasket your looking at a few new bits might be more wrong with it then just that.

6400 out of an RG IS crap. You need new valve springs. They don't last forever.
