deciphering nettype is sometimes fun learn to live with it - because not everyones perfect !
hell if we all were perfect - there would be no one to hang shit on - and that would automatically mean 50% less fun on the internet

exactly
and i dont think that citing internet-driven abrievited typing techniques is a vaild excuse for typing "there" when the correct word is "their" (for example)
what it does show is a poor level of basic spelling an gramatical principles in the internet population...

DannyGT4 wrote on Fri, 04 July 2003 11:34 | i'm not excusing it... i'm explaining it
why did you type in lowercase?
... you're either lazy or you recognise that it is the 'accepted' way for quick internet communication
i'm saying once you start throwing some of the rules out they ALL go out eventually
that's just the way it is
and yes it generally means that the internet population have a bad grasp of the english language but can also mean that they are lazy as well
either way its not a healthy future for the written word
|
I think his point is that it's one thing to type their to start a sentence, but it's a totally different thing to typing There...
One is due to laziness, the other is due to complete lack of grammatical knowledge (which is the thing he's complaining about).

shane, this was never meant to come off as offensive...
if you can learn the diferent variants of there/their/they're, then youre better off already...
here's another one:
"OFF" - so as to be removed or distant from "got off the bike"
"OF" - pertaining, belonging or connected to "the colour of my car"

thats exactly the attitude i'm talking about ed... its not necessarily the knowledge of the grammer but the perception of it being the internet so it doesn't matter
its the attitudes which need to change first - people must WANT to be able to written in good gramma - then we can start giving english lessons

sometimes it truly does become difficult for anyone to understand what some people are typing and trying to say. Especially with the lack of grammatical punctuation such as commas and full stops, it becomes difficult to understand people's sentence structure- consequently i get lost in a jumble of misspelt words and lack of grammer and it becomes too difficult to read what the person has written.
P.S. Dew knot trust yore spell chequer.

There, their and they're doesn't bother me much.
What bothers me is bought and bRought.
They're two different words, with two different meanings! I stop people in the street and correct them!
eg "I bought this from home." Does this mean the shop Home (hardware)? Do they have to pay for things at their home?
bought - from the word 'buy' - paid money for this at a shop
brought - from the word 'bring' - carried with me from somewhere
There are lots of other things that bug me with language, but bought and brought is the biggest.
