ok,

/ start rant

we're all allowed to make mistakes now and then, but one thing that drives me nuts on these forums is peoples inability to use "their, they're and there" correctly... YEASH Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

THEIR - ownership: "it was theirs"
THEY'RE - contraction of they are: "They're coming over later"
THERE - descriptive: "it's over there"

/ end rant

sorry Shocked
ed

it bugs me to tears as well... but the internet encourages and rewards quick typing... that brings with it mistakes but more often than not it means that people neglect punctuation and neglect to proof read simply because they don't have time

yes it's a problem... but its only going to be solved by changing how communication happens on the internet

as more and more people continue to rely on the internet their (ooo the right 'their' too) spelling and grammer skills will decrease... i hate to think how our kids are going to be writing in the future Crying or Very Sad

exactly

and i dont think that citing internet-driven abrievited typing techniques is a vaild excuse for typing "there" when the correct word is "their" (for example)

what it does show is a poor level of basic spelling an gramatical principles in the internet population...

lol

i'm not excusing it... i'm explaining it

why did you type in lowercase?

... you're either lazy or you recognise that it is the 'accepted' way for quick internet communication

i'm saying once you start throwing some of the rules out they ALL go out eventually

that's just the way it is

and yes it generally means that the internet population have a bad grasp of the english language but can also mean that they are lazy as well

either way its not a healthy future for the written word

I think his point is that it's one thing to type their to start a sentence, but it's a totally different thing to typing There...
One is due to laziness, the other is due to complete lack of grammatical knowledge (which is the thing he's complaining about).

ok point taken...

...i suppose mine is that sometimes it is due to the speed of which it all happens... i have a pretty good grasp of the english language but sometimes type quickly without proof reading and have made this mistake

ultimately i'm saying complaining or trying to educate won't do much good - you need to change the way people communicate on the internet

most people expect poor grammer and spelling and excuse it because it is internet based

shane, this was never meant to come off as offensive...

if you can learn the diferent variants of there/their/they're, then youre better off already...

here's another one:

"OFF" - so as to be removed or distant from "got off the bike"
"OF" - pertaining, belonging or connected to "the colour of my car"

its called trying to maintain some level of standard in the english language. you say "as long as you can still understand it" ... but how far does language have to degenerate before people can no longer comprehend what is being said??

thats exactly the attitude i'm talking about ed... its not necessarily the knowledge of the grammer but the perception of it being the internet so it doesn't matter

its the attitudes which need to change first - people must WANT to be able to written in good gramma - then we can start giving english lessons

sometimes it truly does become difficult for anyone to understand what some people are typing and trying to say. Especially with the lack of grammatical punctuation such as commas and full stops, it becomes difficult to understand people's sentence structure- consequently i get lost in a jumble of misspelt words and lack of grammer and it becomes too difficult to read what the person has written.

P.S. Dew knot trust yore spell chequer.

Sometimes it's funny. Sometimes it's so bad, you cringe.

Ultimately, it's a little elitist. Generally people are able to make their point. As long as your own spelling and grammar is at level you are prepared to accept, perhaps it's just best to ignore it.

As for l337 $p3@K, kill them all!

Shame about Robbo. He actually made a short lived return (V8MA61)and behaved impeccably!

There, their and they're doesn't bother me much.

What bothers me is bought and bRought.

They're two different words, with two different meanings! I stop people in the street and correct them!

eg "I bought this from home." Does this mean the shop Home (hardware)? Do they have to pay for things at their home?

bought - from the word 'buy' - paid money for this at a shop
brought - from the word 'bring' - carried with me from somewhere

There are lots of other things that bug me with language, but bought and brought is the biggest.

OH - i forgot one.

"wreaking" .... For F**KS SAKE! it's WRECKING! I cannot STAND the number of people who create threads with "wreaking" in the title. Wreaking reads as 'ree-king'.
