Dyno day questions Thu, 03 July 2003 12:37 Go to next message
Just got a curiousity on cooling for dyno day

seeing my gt4 runs a top mount intercooler - do they have a secondary fan or any piping to direct maximum airflow into the scoop - as if the cars moving - i know they usually run a big one out front of the car for radiator or front mount cooling ...

just an idea - because i know that heatsoak will effect my result in the end

the only cooling is the usual big fan out the front

there are servos nearby so if you ice up before you're run thats fine

Why do you guys want to cheat like that? You're only lying to yourself when you artificially inflate your power figures like that.

I think the main problem would be heat soak when you sit there with your car idling before the run.. Hence the dyno figure might be artifically DEflated, because this is also not the normal condition that a vehicle operates under (in most occasions). You could do the run without warming the car up first, but who wants to subject their engine to that? I mean.. some people don't even like the thought of starting their car when there's a bit of ice on it from overnight.. Razz

Lets not forget that there ARE trophies involved also.. That might be incentive to use every little advantage for a higher figure (whether it's accurate for day to day driving or not)

Generally, at the traffic light GP, your car's been sitting there for at least a minute heat soaking away anyway....

Or before you run at the Creek, you do a burnout, which is also another factor for heat soak.

I can understand trying to win a trophy, but would you be satisfied if you used octane booster to win a trophy over someone who didn't?

Fair points.. Probably not really as relevant on a track/windy road/late night drive when you want to get all the power out of your car that you can..

I'd be satisfied each and every time I look over at my nice shiny trophy. Razz Very Happy

Hey, I sometimes think that we should make it a bit more of a competition like that, at least for the people that havn't done a host of new mods every 6 months, a competition to see how much power can be made from various little things like ice & octane boosters etc.
There's hundreds of little things things you could make, alot of which could be applied to the street, and it would at least be something to get people thinking.

all i asked is do they use a secondary fan to pipe into the scoop to simulate road conditions - obviously the fan out front will give frontmount owners an advantage !

ill think about the ice idea - though i know i wont be taking a tropy home - unless dannys car burns - and garys blows a turbo or something .. i just want a REALISTIC figure of what maximum power my gt4 is producing to give me anidea how far i have to go to get the end results i want - which is around 180 - 200 kw at the wheels

anyway - see you lot tomorrow - or tonite if we all meet at the RSL
