Is the pipe your talking about the one that runs behind the cylinder block (well in a Rolla anyway )???
Line the cam gears up with the dots that are already marked on the metal plate behind them... They are the timing marks... So when you put it all back together, if you set the cam gears to those marks, the timing will still be correct...

the Max Ellery manual discribes the way to get the cam and distriutor timing lined up right.
I have manual for the 4AC in a FWD corolla, but its the same engine as in the AE86.
The manuals are pricey, but worth their weight in gold!

Yeah, these pipes pull out, but getting them back is fun Make sure you get a new O ring for it, and smear a little bit of sealant on it as well after giving everything a good clean, otherwise these little mongrels will leak, leak, leak
