More car paint prep q's

Hey Guys,
Well after some sanding I have hit gold (metal) (doing the bootlid) and am wondering how smooth the metal should be before applying the primer?
I found that in many areas there were quite a few scratches that look like they were done with 80 d sandpaper or similar.
Even with these scratches underneath I found that the final finish looked fine, should I sand the surface to a very smooth scratch free surface or will the primer and filler take care of these imperfections. Or is this slightly rough surface needed for the primer to stick to the surface properly? What primer/filler etc should I use?
cheers

use primer/hi fill to fill in the scratches in the metal dude. don't fuss yourself trying to get the metal surface smooth as, sure, clean it up take off as much paint as you can get then, hit it with primer, then, start applying the hi-fill to fill in the bits that need it.

It basically a spray putty that gets sprayed on very lightly to fill the little imperfections.

Hmm, ok. My car is going to receive 2 coats of POR15 as well as two coats of primer, whats the chances I'll need some hi-fill as well?

Unless your file finishing the metal, chances are very high.

Whats file finishing? I've heard the term bandied around a fair bit, but I don't know what it meant.

Exactly what it sounds like. You can file finish all the metal before you prime it.
All the hot rodders do this. Personally I think a bit of high fill is a good thing.

I still don't get file finish. You get a file and do what? Scratch the shit out of the whole body? Explain...

Are you serious??? How does that achieve something (seriously)? Basically I've stripped my car back to bare metal, with two coats of POR15 over the whole thing. When do I apply the high-fill, after the primer or what?

When you use por15 you have to use their tie coat primer over the por15 because nothing else sticks properly. After you use the tiecoat you can spray on any normal hifill.
