does anyone know if the cold start injector is only supposed to squirt when the engine is cranking or does it also squirt during normal cold running?
as I understand it the cold start injector is wired up so as to only receive power when the starter is cranking. as soon as the motor is running and not receiving the crank signal the cold start injector stops squirting.
and the thermo time switch is only there to limit how long the injector can run (for eg it stops injecting fuel after about 8sec of cranking). - to prevent flooding and plug fouling

chrisss might be different for the 5M but the 4AGE cold start injector has a sensor on the back of the head which actually measures the water temp, and, when the water temp gets to a certain point it switches it off.
if memory serves the sensor is brown - it has an injector like plug on it. (4AGE though)

Pretty much what Grega Said.
It's either the water temp sensor or the CSI time switch.
There is a little time switch which turns of the CSI after 5-10 secs. I am almost certain this is not working. On the 5M it sits down low on the intake manifold, at the front of the thermostat housing. You will need a 24 mm socket to get it off - it has an injector plug and has green and black wires running to it.
The water temp sensor is a smaller unit and it sits near the same place, but more towards the top and back of the thermostat housing. It has a different colored injector plug with yellow and brown wires running to it.
Go to Pick-a-Part and get a couple of each. Swap them over.
