3TGEU Timing? Sun, 06 July 2003 08:40 Go to next message
Can anyone shed some light on setting the timing on these engines? When should the valves be opening and closing on each cylinder?
Is it possible for the valves to hit the pistons on this engine?

Thanks

Ok, Does anyone know how to put the timing chain on and align the cams and crank?

I have some idear, but you should get a mechanic to do this part for you. There are notches in the camshafts and they should all be facing up when the crank is on TDC. But get a meachanic, because you could get mixed up between intake and exhaust cams. They are interchangable, but the timing mark is different.

If you have reground cams, this should be properly timed in with a degree wheel, not relighing on the marks.

Well the cams haven't been out at all. Its just that we had the head off to replace the gasket.

So the notches in the cames should be facing up and the crank at to dead center?

Cool 1,

The Valves WILL hit the pistons if the cam timing is too far out Sad As for timingthem it is detailed inthe Factory Toyota manual and yes the cam notches need to face straight up. You will need the specs of tensioningthe timing chain as well.

I'm working basically 12 hours a day at the moment not counting travel time and I no longer have access to a decent computer scanner or Photoshop so I can't scan the pages for you. If you get really stuck drop me an email to rod@toymods.org.au and if you can bear with me for a while (prolly a couple of weeks Sad ) I'll try get you the info some how. If you can find the TM manula on it the 2TG rebuild section is absolutely Goldern, Shits all over the Genuine Toyota manual as it was written locally in conjunstion with Toyota themselves. !! (I could say you should have bid on the one in the Auction... But I wont Wink )
