well the good people at toyota has finally solved the mystery. 2 start off with, yes the dizzy seal was leaking and it was replaced, however he said theres an inner seal that also needs 2 be replaced soon, and i have 2 replace the whole dizzy. but the main leak was coming from a cracked seal on the drive shafts, which connects 2 gearbox(?) which in terms leaks gearbox oil... which means more $$$ Rolling Eyes

its on a 88 model twin cam seca (ae82), the toyota guy said it wouldn't be worth while 2 replace them as re-con 1's would only cost a fraction more. if i remember properly he said around $180 plus 1 hour of labour? i was actually thinking of either reconditioning my gearbox while I'm at it or fit the 20v box, anyone have experience in this? how much roughly would a workshop charge? any recommendation in north sydney area? thanks 4 any help!

hey there, where abouts did u take it to get it checked out?? what did they say was wrong, if it is the driveshafts, it is cheaper to get them recon then brand new from toyota,
Whats wrong with the box??
it is normal for the driveshaft boots to split after awhile, its normal wear and tear, im sure its more then $180 tho it might be $180 if its just the seals in the gearbox where the shafts go into

im on the beachers so if u need help

it was the toyota dealer at hornsby, i originally asked them 2 check 4 oil leaks on or around the engine, but the oil leak (not excessive) was around the busted drive shft seals was what the mechanic told me. im not sure if its complete drive shafts re-con'd or just the boot seals, but he said it shouldnt cost more then $180 plus fitiing. i kind of wanted 2 replace the gearbox as well cause the current 1 seems 2 be on its final leg (clunky+hard 2 engage in first gear and seems very worn out) and i heard the 20v box ratios are much better then twin cam's. what kind of rolla do you own?

i own a ae82 sedan 4agze Laughing Nod , to do the boots on a drive shaft they do both and u get a exchange unit (thats what the mechanic would do) i work for mosman toyota, we charge i think $275 a shaft plus fitting, ummmm im sure the 20v box fits a normal 4age due to same blocks, but if u do that remember shafts will be different (pretty sure), mounts might be different as well, i have the lsd box in my car and i had to change mounts and even mount brackets to suit the box, also the shafts were bigger and i had to upgrade front hubs to fit them

curse u 4 owning a 4agze!!! Laughing yeah toyota always seem 2 charge more then others, although they tend 2 do a better job. it seems like a lot of trouble just 2 fit the 20v gearbox, so i might just fix the leak and see how it goes, besides, fingers and toes crossed that i will be getting a REAL EVO 2 soonish hehehe so prob no more money spent on the rolla atm
