Problem with 4K tappets, starters and big ends!

Hi all,
does anyone know the tappet clearances for the old 4k? She's getting a bit noisy. Being a 4k it's a surprise it's still going as well as it it.
Additionally I'm getting a gentle knocking noise from deep within the engine (quite sure it's separate from the tappets) and it's a regular quiet knock. I'm thinking it might be the big end bearings. Being a bit of a novice, does anyone know how hard they are to replace, or if it might not be the big end at all?
Also, it looks like there is a little oil seeping from where the starter bolts onto the block...um stupid question but, is there supposed to be a gasket in there? Coz sure as hell there's not one in there!

OK.
1)For standard lift camshaft the 4K tappet clearence should be intake:0.20mm, exhaust:0.30mm set while HOT. Make sure you follow the correct sequence otherwise it is pointless.
2)Check engine oil. When was it last changed and what grade of oil was it? Recommend to replace oil(if not done recently)reset tappets, check dwell and timing then listen for the noise.
3)Oil leak from starter??? should not be ANY oil here. Recommend $2 can of degeaser from super cheap, then keep an eye out ofr possible source.

Thanks for your help,
I had a chance to have a better look and the leak is not coming from the starter... ...it seems to be coming from the number 3 and 4 spark plug cups, they seem a bit damaged so I'll just replace them with better ones and I'll see how I go.
The engine has ratshit oil in it - don't know the grade - do you guys recommend the 'oil for older engines' by Shell or whatever, or it that shite in your opinions?

Oils ain't oils Sol.
Always had good success with both Penzoil and Penrite range of oils. Only use "for older engines" oils when the motor is ratshit. If you have bottom end noises then these oils would probably be worth wile.
