Corona ST141 / RT142 conversion options Tue, 02 July 2002 13:20 Go to next message
Hey all,

I am new to these forums but I've been lurking for a while.
I previously owned an '84 Corona but now I own a Cordia Turbo. The thing is, I have a hankering for more RWD action ... and I was thinking about beefing up a Corona because I have seen a couple of impressive ones.

So ... I was considering these engines, and was wondering if anybody had any comments on ease of fit, suitability, and so on.

I would be looking for an easy 220 kW+ at the flywheel, preferably using the stock ECU.

Toyota 1JZ-GTE
Toyota 1G-GTE
Nissan FJ20ET
Nissan RB20DET

Thanks!
Alex

A 1G-GTE boosted to 14psi will make over 220kW at the fly.

That's the easiest conversion and the cheapest way to meet your target.

Oy!

What's wrong with Coronas?
I'd take pleasure in raping other cars in one.

Is it true that the 1G-GTEs are a bit lacking in low speed torque?
Also how do they compare weight wise to the standard 2S-C and 22R-E motors?

Cheers

Dude, with the weight of your car, you won't really notice the torque. Once on boost, there's plenty of torque though (275Nm).

If you want, come along to the dyno day or the monthly meeting and I'll take you for a ride.

The 1G-GTE was lighter than my 21R-C so it's definately lighter than the 22R-E. Not sure how heavy a 2S-C is though so I can't comment on that.

Oh yeah, don't worry about the Corona jokes. At least you aren't driving a Corolla/Sprinter.... Rolling

Hey,

Nark: I live in Melbourne so unfortunately I can't take you up on that offer! What G-tech times etc do you get on your Celica?

Mr_Fusion: Yeah I owned the 2 litre Corona before ... It was a 4-speed but it was great ... I could chirp it into second and it inspired my lust for performance.

Some guy in NSW or Queensland advertised one in the Trading Post the other week with a Nissan FJ20ET in it. I heard those engines were bullet proof ... and with the Toyota twin turbo engines, I wasn't so sure about reliability with the two turbos.

Do either of you know of a suitable brake upgrade for Coronas?

As for fitting a 1GGTE, do the standard 2S or 22R-E mounts fit?

Cheers!
Alex

No G-Tech times, but I guesstimate about 0-100km/h in 6.5 seconds and quarter mile in mid-14s. I beat 200SXs and WRXs if that gives you an idea of speed.

Never mind the Corona jokes from me, ST14x and RA6x are almost the same cars anyway! Smile

I wouldn't really worry about reliability especially with your power goal. It's a Toyota engine....

And FJ20DETs are quite as bulletproof as a lot of guys would have you believe...

No idea on the brake upgrade. You should have the 255mm vented front disks shouldn't you? Do you have rear discs or drums?

You will require custom mounts to fit a 1G-GTE...

Nark,

I'd be nearly getting mid 14s on the Cordia. I was hoping to break into the 13s otherwise I'll just keep the Hordia. Except the 0-100 sucks on this car, bloody FWD.

Although reliability is one benefit of Toyotas!! I spent $25 on the old Corona in 2.5 years. I've changed a few things in six months on the Cordia ... thank God for the parts car Smile

Brakes on the ST141 were solid not vented, and 250mm. The rears were drums ... I'm not sure whether to get one with the all wheel discs (RT142s only I believe, not sure though) or not since they are more expensive ... and the ST141s look better.

What are the custom engine mounts worth?

Thanks again!
Alex

hey mate i got a quote for custom engine mounts, install gearbox (not wiring of computer etc) for $1100 at Mrenforcer engineering, that wa s a coupla months ago though!

I agree that the st141 is the better shape all in all as well!
Ive been told by people on the forums here as well that the rt141/2 rear disc end bolts straight on to the ST141, im hoping to do that this year!

ALl the best and keep in touch mate, we can swap tips!! Laughing

tyreburner, keep in mind that my car is completely stock. I haven't even wound the boost up!

I'm sure if you boosted it up, slapped some new turbos on, and put in a decent dump pipe you could run 13s easily.

Hey Hey.
Another few keen Corona owners.
I myself have an ST 141 "Avante"
If you're after a disc rear end the Avante model in the ST141 would be the go.
I'd have to check if they're vented or solid.
They're a great improvement on the drum brakes of the other ST141's.
Previously owned a CS ST141 as well.

Avante mainly came in a 4 speed auto. (3Spd + O/D)
Therefor you will get a different ratio if you use the overall diff.
But you can just change the axles/brake assemblies.
I know i've killed a couple of diffs, since it was changed from auto to manual.

Well a bit of useless ramble may come in handy.
I'm keen on getting a RT142 series and performing some upgrades.

Also drive round a 1992 Cressida "Grande"
Minor mods as yet.
Cheers,
Nathan

Never know might come in handy for someone!

Could be something still on the production line like a lot of my plans lol.
Money is the big limit!!
And spare time too.

Just wondering has your corona got any mods?

Cheers,
Nathan

No. Engine conversions are never worth it.

However, that hasn't stopped a lot of us from doing it anyway. It doesn't make sense, but it doesn't have to. Wink
