Exhaust Dump Pipes

Hey Guys
In regards to the dump pipes for exhausts is there a significant difference in sound with different sizes?
I am thinking of getting a full exhaust system extractors, hi-flow cat, 2.25 inch system (redback muffler) but I can't decide on the dump pipe out the back.
From the exhaust shop the guy said the 3 inch is the right size and the most popular size. After comparing the 3inch, 3.5inch and 4inch I am more swayed towards the 3.5 inch or 4 inch. I am swayed more to the bigger sizes due to the look factor I suppose. The exhaust shop are of the opinion that anything above the 3inch would make the exhaust sound "barky" when you back off the throttle and it might start sound a bit "tinny" up high in the rev range. I am looking for an exhaust will a deep growling sound rather than a high pitched "tinny" sound.
Any suggestions/opinions/experiences would be appreciated.

I'm assuming you are talking about a 4AGE...well, if the exhaust shop I went to suggested a 3" exhaust or even bigger for my NA 1.6l...I'd be going somewhere else.
How big is the exhaust on your 3l turbo engine Norbie?

Sorry guys, I should have clarified it.
Yep its for a 4AGE ... I was referring to the exhaust tip. Sorry got everyone confused. The engine is a 4AGE 100Kw NA. Just wondering if the size of the tip out the back will make a difference in the sound of the system. The tip out the back as suggested by the exhaust shop is a 3 inch chrome dump tip. I was wondering about going 3.5 or 4 inch. Does it make a difference.

I personaly dont like the "dumper" tips I like the straight back tip. My 4ac rolla has a 4.5inch HKS tip (laugh if you like it was not my doing). I does however sound very nice, its the best sounding AE82 I have heard. I would not have gone for this tip if I was doing it.

My 300 rwhp Supra has a 3" exhaust tip. Anyone who puts a 3" or larger tip on a 100 rwhp Corolla is just...

hey guys leave him alone, things get a little like this here.
He just wants to know the sound difference of the exhaust tip, he obviously wants the bigger and thats upto him, he doesn't need 10 comments on how you don't like big tips or that just cos you got 300rwhd and only got 3inch then he isn't allowd his 4inch tip.
He wants to know how its gonna sound if there will be any difference.

OK sorry. I accept I was out of line....I just couldn't help myself.
The tip diameter given that it so oversized will make little to no difference in the sound of your exhaust (all other things being equal). It certainly will make no difference to your power output. It, however, will attract significant (unwanted) attention.

it will make it louder, but on an engine that small, sound worse (of course depends who you ask)
if you really want a tip, go and do it, it's your car, just make sure it complies to regulations (89 or something decibels?)

Well for a N/A 4cyl anything more than 2.5" is just plain stupid.
I have extractors and a 2.5" strait through single muffler.
Its fkn loud its sounds nice but when your cruzin on 80 u get a little drone. My stereo takes care of that.
But a 4inch
You should save yourself the money and buy a milo tin get some tek screw bung it on.
instant rice buy one get a free sticker to put on your guard

This thread seems like the right one to ask my exuast/muffler question.
I thought i had a 3" exuast, but it turns out only my muffler is 3", the exuast is just 2.5" . It's loud as hell, i want the high pitched japanesey sound, not overly loud. So what would be the best way to achieve this? just get the stock 2.5" muffler? I take it that going back to a 2.5" muffler on a 2.5" exuast isn't going to affect performance at all? if it was a 3" exuast with a 2.5" muffler, then it would affect performance, correct?
i'm probably going to be harrased by the *experts*, could i just get a straight answer?

Dont worry Dave is just an agro little barstard
*puts Dave back on chain and gives him an LED exhaust tip to chew on*
as for your ma70 start at the turbo and work back the O2 sensor housing is the first point of call then next on my hit list (after the 105kph JDM warning ding-dong) is the CAT and then a nice plain non-coper-attracting non-rusting stainless 3inch in AND OUT rear muffler

Theres WAY too much tongue work in this thread....and frankly i'm a little worried.
I'd say go for usefulness over looks anyday...then again i'm cheap and kind of practicle
Ask yourself this...do you really *NEED* a 14" fart can exhaust tip? And will it really look good to people other than those who put stickers on their neons to make them light up faster? And most importantly...should i do somthing with my tongue such as stick it out or bite it?

hey man give the guy a break.. i also have wondered the same thing... i dun like my tip.. 3 inch or 2.5 i think dunno really.. its one of those angled cut off chrome ones thats been painted matt black..
i wanna get a new one.. i was thinkin bout gettin a cannon.. but then realised that that would change my exhaust note..which is already perfect and does not sound the slightest bit tinny at all
so yea.. i think i am goin to my mates work tonight so im thinkin bout seein if he has any 3' intercooler pipe spare.. and i'll just polish it up and weld it on(after cuttin old one off...
any before all u ppl that like to criticise others..my answer to ur critisizm is...WHY THE FUCK NOT!!!I DONT PUT SHIT ON UR CAR... AND I DONT PUT SHIT ON YOUR CARS BOUT UR UNNECESARY AND/OR UGLY MODIFICATIONS.. so yea..thats my opinion..

Well put blown20v
I think what we are asking is a legitimate question and I think the forums is a place for sharing advice and experiences, not to bag out each other about stuff they want to put on their cars... cars are about individualism. We just simply want to hear what people have experienced and see what has worked for others.

3 inch exhaust = 3 inch tip
4 inch exhaust = 4 inch tip

If he's really into rice
And i mean real rice, not the type that money buys
He could get a blacksupra "logic" exhaust
THEN buy a fake gold exhaust tip and screw it on!!
Cant you just smell the class?
