How to pull apart a speedo?

Hi all,
I have a UK speedo for the Sprinter that reads in miles for the mileage (I guess thats why they call it mileage) and both MPH and KMH for the speed. What I wanted to do was use the metric gears from an Aus cluster to record the mileage (in km's) but keep the 240kmh speedo. Does that make sense?
Anyone pulled one apart before? Got any tips on how to get the speedo needle off without breaking anything? Is it worth it!?
Thanks,
Denis

Couldnt speak for a sprinter one in particular, but all the speedos I have had apart the needle just pulls off. Just grip the needle firmly between thumb and index finger and pull off. Ensure that you pull back square or else you could bend the shaft the needle fits to. DO NOT USE A SCREWDRIVER UNDER ONE SIDE OF THE NEEDLE as this will bend the shaft for sure.
Just check that the numbers are in the same place around the gauge back panel, if they are then swap the entire speedo mechanism (i.e. just change the back panel over). It would be a lot easier than stuffing about with the gears.
Good luck!

Unfortunately they don't line up. The Aus speedo runs to 180kmh, the UK one to 240kmh. Different calibrations.
I tried the index/forefinger thing but its on tight which is why I asked.
Thanks,

The easiest way to pop the needle is to use 2 kitchen forks, one on each side to lever it off.
Another way is to re-cal your aussie speedo, jack up wheels securely and run it in top gear, use tacho to cal new upper speeds. Take off speedo face, scan image into pc, edit image with new marks, print out on good paper, stick back on speedo face.
Results can be so good no-one will pick it!

Thanks guys. The forks worked a treat without marking the dash.
The next problem is removing the "springs" from the speedo spindle...
Thanks Pedro.
