changing AE82 control arm Thu, 10 July 2003 00:07 Go to next message
Hello, i'm trying to help out a mate who needs to change a passanger side control arm on his AE82 corolla.

I'm not able to help with it and he has never done it before. So wanted to know if anyone here has done this job and might be able to give me a real quick run-down on the process?

Unbolt from xmember..
Do you need to pull out the CV?
Unbolt strut from steering knuckle or can you undo the ball joint from the control arm?

Thanks
Joel

Real simple this one. Should take you about 15 to 20 minutes.

Once you have the front of the car off the ground, you will have to support it on the jack points at the front of each sill panel.

Undo the bolts holding the arm to the chassis (remember, the x member didnt arrive till the AE92 model), 2 bolts on each of the 2 mounting points. Undo the three bolts on the outer end of the control arm to the ball joint, and your done! Theres no sway bar to worry about on the single cam AE82s.

No need to remove ot even touch the CV or drive shaft.

Instalation is reverse of removal, taking care to do things up to the correct torque.

Dont forget to get your front wheel alingment checked. While the control arms should be the same, you never know.

Also, if you are changing the arm cause its bent or damaged, take a good look at everything its bolted to, and there may be more damage than at first glance. Make sure the rubber bushes are OK on the new arm as well.

Good Luck!

Craig.

Many thanks! It's actually the 4AGE model though. It is the real square back one. These are AE82 right?
