I'm off to look at the TA23 2000ST tomorrow, and wondered if I could get a quick short list of things to look for?

Any certain danger zones I need to check? I'm new to Celicas and want to make sure I don't get tooooo badly burned!

Any suggestions welcomed!

Cheers Cool

well if it's a TA23 2000ST, then that's a worry in itself... TA23s have a T series engine in them, which is either a 1600 or 1800. are you sure it's not an RA23? It should have an 18r-b I think :S

TA23's only had 2T's (ie 1600cc). Of course it's entirely possible someone has done a conversion at some point!

TO answer the question, the major concerns are rust, rust and rust. The mechanicals are pretty much bulletproof and cheap/easy to fix, but a dodgy rusty body will cost a fortune to repair. Check it out carefully, and take a fridge magnet with you!

Ok my ignorance is showing now!

The one I'm going to see is identical, even in condition, to this one:

http://www.toymods.org.au/Dyno_Day_2/Images/Dave_s _RA23.jpg

It has the same colour and chrome on the sides, so I guess that makes it an RA23 2000ST right?

If so, where can I get more usefull info on this particular model, like a spec sheet or something?

I know of one part that needs welding, but the owner assures me it's only one small patch, and it certianly looks that way from the pics I've seen. It has some minor patches of surfcae rust, and I plan to have it sprayed after I've bought it anyway.

Hey, it's an ST. LT's were the only one's released in Australia. That's pretty cool. I've got some ST parts and was looking to do mine up as a ST. I was told the main differents between the LT's and the ST's were, front grill, ST badge on the back, lights in the Door skins, instead of a oil and charge warning light it's got a guage for these.

But anyway, Rust! Check the sils under the doors, there is drain holes there which would have been plugged. Check that these are unplugged otherwise they rust from the inside out. Inside the rear wheel arches there is a lip where dirt and mud sit so check that there's no rust there. Inside the rear quarters in the bottom of the boot, can rust there. The front quarters fold back on themselves, an nice place for mud to sit, therefore rusting from the inside out. Parcel shelf, around the window and same with the windscreen.

I own 3 RA23's and these are the standard rust spots on all of them. Be careful because they rust from the inside out.
