Sticker Shock - MA61 Centre Support Bearing Sat, 12 July 2003 03:04 Go to next message
All,
I've been chasing a rumble in the driveline of my MA61 for a while. Just had the rear up on stands and ran it - still noisy. Disconnected the half shafts & ran it again - still noisy. So it is either the diff or the centre bearing - right? I changed the diff last year & there was no change in the noise so I assume it is the centre support bearing for the propeller shaft.
Toyota just quoted me $315 for it!!!!! (more than I paid for a whole s/hand diff).
Are there any aftermarket alternatives for the centre support bearing?

Thanks

Peter

$110 from repco

also have a look at your unversal joints. they can be prone to making noise (and the bloody things ARENT replacable)

cheers

Thanks Ed. I have to admit I don't know squat about inspecting uni joints. I assume it is best if I drop the whole prop shaft out & check for play in the joints?

Thanks

Peter

yeah, drop the shaft and feel for play in the joints, both rotationally, and laterally.

theres not much you can do if a joint is stuffed though, so be prepared to replace the driveshafts, or have some new joint fabricated onto the existing shaft, should you find one is totally bugered.

most likely youll find theyre pretty ok, but perhaps a bit rusty, stiff, under-lubed etc. try and free the joints up a bit, and lube them well before reinstalling

cheers
ed

The centre bearing should have a little movement but not a lot.

Quick question, is it just noise or are you getting vibrations as well. If you are getting a vibration, it could be that the two halves of the prop shaft were split and bolted back together out of phase. These shafts are balanced bolted together as a pair and will be out of balance if they are out of phase.

If it is just noise..... does it make noise when idleing??? it could be a thrust bearing.

If it is good at idle and noisy when driving, it could be the bearing at the back of the gearbox.

Check your wheel bearings as well.

Thanks Gold28.
I have had this 'noise' since I got the car (nearly two years ago).
Symptoms:
- is a rumble/whine at 65-70kms, no vibration is evident
- is independent of road condition (wet/dry), accelerating/braking, cornering, temperature
- seems like it is coming from the rear of the car

I actually replaced the 3.7 diff in it ('cause I was convinced it was the diff) with a 3.9 - but the noise is still the same.
I pulled the prop shaft last weekend & you can see the paintmarks on the shaft from when they balanced it (was balanced about 5 years ago) - so I am reasonably sure it is balanced. I also checked the centre bearing and it felt fine (no binding, no slop). Interestingly, the centre bearing has been installed back-to-front when compared to what the TSRM says.
The gearbox definitely has some input shaft noise, but I when I ran just the gearbox & the front half of the propeller shaft (with the centre bearing) I didn't get the rumble/whine - just vibration (as expected), so I don't think it is the gearbox.
I spent most of Saturday with it up on stands trying to figure it out - no real conclusion. At least I know the uni joints & centre bearing are ok now.
I can only guess:
a) it really was my old diff, & the replacement one has the same problem
b) it is a rear wheel bearing - although there is no slop/play/noise I can detect by hand
c) it is one of the CV joints on the end of the rear half-shafts (how do I check for that?)
d) it is a front wheel bearing disguising itself as a rear-end noise
e) tyre noise
I think I'll have to invest in a louder stereo system!

Thanks

Peter

BTW - Justin I have a 3.9 diff at the moment. If I ever get around to a 1UZ or 1JZ swap I figure I'll put a trutrak centre in my old 3.7 and it should be ideal.
