Fundraiser for charity

I had a kinda weird idea last nite, and hopefully the club as a whole could get behind this. As alot of us like to get our hands dirty and most of us are "built not bought" types, i THOUGHT that we MAY be able to build a car (hopefully with all/most bits donated by club members/affiliates), register it make it COMPLETELY legal, and then auction it off, with all proceeds going to a designated charity (Westmead Childrens Hospital, the Salvo's, or whoever we decide!). Now, im not sure (if it happened) what we would build, BUT i have a complete 1G with g/box, wiring, i/c, etc..basically everything thats needed to go into ANY old Celica (possibly even a TA22). Im sure there are spray painters, panel beaters, mechanics etc among us that would donate their time to this cause.
Now i know this is a LONG shot, but it is an idea for doin something for people out there who arent as lucky/fortunate as we are. And also i think it would be good for Toymods to get out and show people that we arent just "hoons" or "car idiots"(not that the club is known for that anyway!), but to let people know that we are not JUST a car club.
Hopefully everyone can give their thoughts on this, and if the board could also throw some thoughts/ideas up into the air...
Thanx heaps, Phill

Phill,
Well i think it is a great idea. I think the whole concept needs to be "nutted out" but i think you should bring it up at the next meeting.
Maybe someone on the board could look into the legal ramifications of the club doing this, i do not think that there would be many problem to overcome, especially if it was all legally engineered etc.
It is great to see the members throwing around ideas - now all we have to do is get them into action!

Tina & Iggy.... The legal side is the only thing that has me stumped. There would be no problems geting the car engineered (as alot of us know exactly what the engineer's require). We could also have Zoom do an article on the whole event, if they were interested of course (but who wouldn't be!!).
I am definately keen in helping the board with the "nutting"out process, and yes i will bring it up at the next meeting.
I think this is a great chance for the club to get better known in the community, and, who knows, it may leed to bigger and better things, both for the people we help and the club....
Thinking required , Phill

Unfortunately that doesn't stop someone dragging this through the courts and the insurance company weaselling out of paying court cost to defend it because of technicalities.

I think the whole legal issue, if there is one, will be investigated by the appropriate board member.
I cannot forsee there being any problem if the car was LEGALLY engineered. I think if the club looked into some legal advice on the appropriate disclaimer when the vehicle was auctioned and then passed to the new owner it will all be Okay.
We could even look at approaching people like Shannon's, Sold.com and Ebay about helping out with an online auction for example.
The possibilities are endless............
Just some thoughts.....

Surely any legality problems would come back to the person that passes the car for roadworthyness, just like any other car?

Great Idea, this would be a great reflection on the club. This is the sort of project I think would cause a lot of intrest and therefore sponsers would be keen......especially if its published in a Mag.If I can help in anyway I will be more then happy to do so.
If the legal issues are overcome maybe we could setout a donation section of items and parts that are needed to get the projet happening......all money raised will be going towards the 3SGTE rebuild

well if there is too many issues with the club owning the car what about if we entrust the ownership to an individual, say phil as its his idea, then action it off for charity just the same only he will be representing the club.
then it could be deemed as a private sale.

Well a thought occurred to me this morning. The general concept is that Toymods supplies the muscle, sweat and hardware while being "supervised" by a business that already repairs and sells cars. This would mean the duty of care is with that business and Toymods would avoid opening up a whole can of worms.
The first place I'd investigate is TAFE. I have seen on TV that the auto mechanic students fix up a car then donate them to needy families. So they are have some kind of infrastructure to maybe turn Phil's idea into a reality. Also check out the wreckers. I'm sure they do these kinds of trades.
Getting the car road registered is the easy part. It's everything else that gets complicated.

If the legals are overwhelming then why not do somethiing a little less adventurous and not do an engine transplant.
I know that ultimately the car would be worth more and be more attractive with a 1g , but it would all be made simpler if the car was stock or close to it. If it didn't have to be engineered, then our work could not be scrutinised could it ??
and with us all moving up to decent engines there must be stacks of 2t,3t,18rg 's laying around that noone is using.
just present a super neat old school modded early celica, as Teenz will show they can go ALlright !!
or put a 1j in it.

I think that Toyo has a point! Maybe you could just keep a standard engine like a 2T and in the future if you feel you would like to try this again, maybe do a conversion.

I am blushing now !!!!
The ideas are great guys and definately deserve some more discussion.
Being married to the President of the club I think I can make sure this idea does not just fall by the way side.

Phil/guys,
The idea is great and we will definatly look into the legals. I think the entrusted individual could work but I'm sure we will get around it either way.
As for stock verses modified not sure it would make much difference to be honest so Personally a Modified (sensibly) Vehicle would probably raise a better result.

I hear what everyone is saying.
TOYO3T.... If we build a car that we are goin to auction off, then it might as well be appealing to the prospective buyers, and a 2T,3T or 18RG, are not that appealing.
The motor is not the only thing to consider here. If it is to be engineered, then we will have to do brakes(which will make it easier to engineer), suspension (including bushes),etc, etc....and there are tryed and proven ways of doin all these. Then there is body work, interior (MAYBE), exhaust and anything else i have missed.
It doesnt matter what motor goes into it, it will be a big job if we are to make the most of the results. Plus, if it all goes ahead, we can organise "working bee's", so that the same people over and over are not working on the car...
There are so many possibilities to consider....
Thanx, Phill!!

Sounds like a great idea Phil....a lot of radio stations do a similar sort of thing but give the car away as a prize so there must be a way around the legals.
The only other issue I can invisage is where the car is stored between/during being worked on?

Hey Phil, Every time we make something sticky, it clutters up the the layout. This thread seems to have its own life anyway without needing to make it sticky.
I'll make it sticky once it builds up more steam and becomes more "official".

Max, No worries
Michael, I have been giving it some thought. What we need is someone who is willing to give up a fair bit of space (unsure of how long tho!),and that could be their donation to the idea. Also, someone who wont get divorced because of it!!! I would volunteer my place, but the place is a parking lot all the time , and parents would get frightfully shitty at ANOTHER car being built in the front yard .

hahaha Dude you havent seen my place have you? Its a regular toymods parking lot plus although I could make space in the shed I doubt it would last long before I got peeved at not beeing able to get to the work bench, and the wife would eventually strangle me cause I would constantly be out there tinkering with it
anyhow if we can solve that one issue Im sure its a go-er
any volunteers?

AWWWW can you feel the love. Any way this project sounds great. I'm in for helping out. And fixing up a stock celica would be the easiest and quickest, but witha conversion its bound to bring in the $$$$ come sale time it will just take longer.

Mate I think you have come up with an absolutely excellent idea!
Or maybe even build one up for those charity bashes... You know the ones, they always have like 2-3 spare tyres on the roof and they are always really old valiants and stuff
Build up a 1GGTE Celica and scoot it across Australia
Nar, but seriously, I really like the idea. Maybe auction it off on eBay as a featured item, maybe they could sponsor the advertisement.

I'd be worried about injuries sustained whilst working on it by you guys. I'm sure that you will do a professional job, it's just that places of business have worker's comp, does toymods? Cos I'm pretty sure even unpaid workers, e.g. volunteers, need to be covered somehow. Sure you might say "nah we won't sue" but if someone loses a thumb and can't do their 9-5 job anymore, then I'm sure that the injured person may not be so "nice" about it.
If you go for the entrusted person thing, and the car is worth a significant amount of $, what's to stop them running off with it? I know, I know, I need to learn to trust ppl.
And whilst I am in my post-maccas rambling state: I think that this charity car thing would be a really good learning opportunity too for those of us that barely know what a timing chain is or how to bog up dents. I, for one, would really like to stop looking like a stunned mullet when it comes to cars, and so I stop getting that "tsk, typical female" look off more knowledgable ppl. Plus, if I am capable to do something myself with my Camry (other than burn it) then all the better, I might feel like a real "modified toyota" member then.

just get everyone to sign(and witness) a legal disclaimer saying that any injuries sustained whilst working on the charity car will take it as a grain of salt and not sue anyone. or somthing along those lines if this was 3.5 years in the future i could get my law student mate to do it up for yall

i say you could contact Triple M for backing as they have done many of events like this where they do up a car, but have you considered maybe even contacting Toyota or some Toyota Dealerships as buy doing this event/cause and due to the name of the club running this event it will be giving advertisment to the toyota brand and yeah Toyota may be interested in helping out.
thats my 2 cents
