22RE -vs- 22R in Hilux

Just seeking some advice and experience on possible engine upgrade on dad's Hilux which is currently running the stock 22R - 1988 model from memory. I believe the 22RE is the same engine but with fuel injection. Anyone know the actual differences between these two engines mechanically, performance-wise and economy-wise. The 22R has reasonable torque but lacks some power and is a bit thirsty with the 4X4 drivelines and the usual 4WD bull/towbars/accessories. Anyone actually done this conversion? Is it just a head, manilfolds, wiring, ECU changeover or more with like fuelling upgrade and motor ancillaries relocation/changeover? What power/torque output does the 22R and 22RE make? If I had it my way, there'd be a 1J or 1UZ in there by now, but he's a little older, wiser, more conservative and not exactly flush with the folding stuff. Thanks

hey there ,
i wouldnt be putting a F/I 22RE in a hilux, mainly because they are a crap engine (with F/I).
I used to own a 86 Corona with the fuel injected 22re and i had nothing but problems with the fuel injection.
the car needed PULP to run half decently, otherwise it was conk out while driving.
mechanics could never properly diagnose the the problem though, but they swayed towards a F/I issue.
plus: i dragged a old hilux a few years back when i had the old girl, and it barely could pass the 22r.
regards mysterious problem solver

I put the EFI with Aftermarket ECU on my '93 hilux 2wd, which made it a really more responsive and cut the fuel comsumption by half, power also was much better, approx. 1.5- 2 car lengths over a standard, pity I just sold all the gear....

Sorry can't believe that, My engine w/out the EFI was put to duty in an XT corona wagon and it ate hilux's for dinner, never got around to fitting the EFI.

Thanks guys for all your responses. soarer40v8 Hard to believe a F/I would be outdone by a factory carb of the same engine - sure it wasn't rooted to start with? singlecam Thanks for the link - backs up that the 22RE is a better performer Was the 22RTE ever available in Oz/imports? Johnny Shame you've just sold all the gear
Still on the fence - anyone else with experience with the standard ECU on the 22RE?

I don't know the exact specs of our aussie 22REs. In other parts of the world there was the tall-block 22RE with analog EFI, then the short block 22RE (slightlky higher comp ration, different head etc) with TCCS EFI. In '85 (ie ra65 celica) we got the short block as far as I can tell, but with the older analog EFI as we were running leaded at the time and I think TCCS needs an o2 sensor. Anyway max power: 105hp@4800rpm OR* 116hp (87kw) max torque: 137lb/ft@2800rpm 140lb/ft (198Nm) compression ratio: 9.1 9.3:1
Stats should lie between the two. A few people have replaced their 22RE with a later 22R from a Hilux when it wears out, and bolted the EFI bits on no problems as far as I know. I think the head and block should be the same. EFI should give more fuel economy. I don't know why the Hilux is carbed.

I'm not sure if the 22RTE was available locally, but it should drop right in as Hiluxs elsewhere got them.

22rte was not made made available in australia you would have to get it imported in, good luck
you can run a very nice cam i think the most you can go is about 280 degrees with .50 lift anything more will max out the computer and send it crazy, you probably should also source the blue injectors 210cc from a 4age 20 valve engine (once again good luck finding these)
lastly i suggest porting out the head before anything is done as the standard 22re restricts air flow majorly this is a real problem when if you begin to increase horsepower anymore
cheers and good luck wayne
