HELP Distributor drive in backwards need ignition Wed, 03 July 2002 09:45 Go to next message
On rebuilding an 18R-GEU a friend put in the dizzy drive backwards so the dizzy won't spin. I need to find a way to do ignition without using the dizzy at all. Anyone have any ideas??? I'm desperate. Don't want to pull the engine apart. Actually don't have the time to do it cause i've gotta drive to the snow on the 18th. Even if you don't know of a system that works and can be bought any info or insight to possible solutions would be welcome.

email me on martin@helica.com.au
or even call 0414 817 013

Thats gotta suck...
I think that you will find it easier and cheaper to pull it apart and put the "dizzy drive" in the correct way!

its only an 18rg so if u remove the rocker cover, dump oil, drop sump onto cross member remove timing case studs under head,(this is best done by useing the 2 nuts one nut goes all the way on the other goes on behind it then hold second nut &undew the first nut against the second until tight then undew stud with bottom nut)if your lucky u may be able to take the timing case cover off without taking the head off if u use a allow dolly to gentle tap the cover off the locating studs and a paint scaper between the head and timing case to ensure that the head gasket doesnt rip.my usumption is that the motor has not yet started so the head gasket hasnt set yet.
i have done this befor so i know it can be done just be careful
take your time. replacing it is just as hard if your not sure then take the head of
ps when u put the cam chains back on remember to put all the slack on the ajuster side with the timing straight up and down
hope ive helped

It's actually just been put in the car yesterday, the idea is to avoid having to pull engine out and pay for a new gasket set as i didn't really think it was possible to get to the timing case without taking the head off...

Another thing is that it's a really nicely done rebuild so it would be a shame to ruin something by trying to do so.

How likely am i to damage anything while doing what you said?

the chances of breakage is moderate but i have done this several times with the 2tg for several reasons and once with the 3tgteu so i gess the 18rg would be the same i use a allow dolly 300mm long and 20mm round tap each side once at a time till it comes off gentle is the word dont twist it
although if pulling the motor out is the problem and the motor hasnt started i would just pullthe head off in the car the gasket should be allright if u didnt use any form of gasket gue or hilamar on the head just slide a paint scraper under the head on top of the gasket and work your way along prying the gasket off gentle so as not to tear it the rest of the gaskets bar timing gasketshould be reausable
ps i sent u a pm
