Engine doesn't start!

I have an RA60 Celica with a 21R-C engine and it won't start.
It turns over fine but then I get a 'popping' sound from the carburettor I think.
I'm new to cars so just making sure the carburettor is the big circle thing with a pipe sticking out yes?
Any ideas?

I shoveed a new alternator into it... that'd be all though Had an auto electrician come around and he swapped plugs on the distributor cap around... He said they were in the wrong firing order and he doesn't understand how it was starting before!

That shouldn't do anything should it? If the alternator doesn't work then it would just not charge the battery, and if it did work then it shouldn't affect the engine starting or not correct?

Was it running fine b4 the auto elec screwed aroung with it ?
cause if the leads are in the wrong order it fire in the wrong order and it does that exact thing u said......make that popping noise
so chances are he got the firing order round the wrong way
