HOW MUCH TO PAY FOR TA22. Tue, 15 July 2003 03:41 Go to next message
Hi Guys,

Have just decided I want to pick up a TA22 celica as my first car. Can anyone give me a rough guide as to what to pay for one that is clean of rust and does no more than run fairly well?

Cheers.

I paid 3k for mine something like 6 years ago. It was bog stock with no rust and a tired engine.

I'm paying 3500 for an RA23 thats clean with no rust. Different model but same era. Totally rust free ones are hard to come by tho, so you might have to pay abit of a premium. Worth it tho.

Well I've got 3 RA23's. One I paid $1750 for, was rusting and the engine is tired and everything that could go wrong has. But it's all been fixed and now is a reliable car.
My second one I paid $500 for, stock standard, rust, engine average with crappy auto transmission. Now is the parts car. Third I paid $600 for. Engine had just been recoed (cost previous owner $800) Rust but not too much that couldn't be fixed. Has been in a few minor accidents so there is a lot of panel beating happening. This is my project and is slowly coming along.

Prices vary, it really depends on how much the car is worth to the people who are selling.

Thanks Guys, that should give me some indication...

Really the most important thing to me is a straight body as the engine will get replaced with a lexus 4litre as soon as I can afford it...

As long as it runs (and just runs) until then I don't care...

Are parts/panels for these things generally expensive?

That would be the one...

Insurance is gonna be a f***ing killer (If i can get it, being under 25 and all Very Happy) but it will be the ultimate sleeper Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

After the engine will come the wheels, then a flip top front end, then the leather interior Very Happy

It's all a pipedream at the moment, but it's a nice pipedream...

i didn't think a 1UZ could fit into a ta22 without major and i mean major modifications, like moving firewall back significantly?

How many mods are needed for a 23 with a 1UZ? I am dreaming of a 1UZ as a second conversion for my black RA23. I know its obviously alot more then the almost drop in 1G

Paid $5K for TA23, tiny amount of rust, 2T-GEU, Re-Upholstered Interior, ROH rolling stock etc...Pretty well perfect. I'd say $5K is upper end of not too modified TA2X, bout $2000-3000 for a good one, but if you want a 3T-GTE or something up front start thinking at least $9K.

if you want that sort of HP straight out of an engine maybe go for a 3sgte as it will at least fit into the engine bay.

thenyou can do a detailed workup of the process for the rest of us too Very Happy

for a first car man id be looking at a easier mod than that Sad
not trying to crash your bubble but regency would go to town on it!
heres a list of realistic exchanges:
18r 4a 2t 3t 1uz
most have twin cam options and are more than enough power for a ta22. they arent all easy mods but they are do able and in some cases bolt ins.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

As I say, at this stage it's just a pipedream that to be honest is a fair way from becoming reality. I do know the 1uz is quite a compact engine, and I do know that it can be done (one of the recordholders on this site has done it) I still have to do a lot of research (and a lot of saving Confused) before I go ahead with it - a good place to start will be buying the donor car first of all. Smile

Will keep you updated with whatever happens.

What about a 1G conversion? Thats what I'm planning for my first. Its cheaper, apparently easier and gives heaps of power

Unfortunately I have a thing for engines with 8 cylinders...

I think the TA22 shape is very classy, the thing only weighs about a tonne, and with some hard work and elbow grease I know I can get 8 cylinders under the bonnet. I may end up going progressive engine upgrades, but the ultimate aim will always be the 1UZ...

Nothing beat's the sound of an 8!! Evil or Very Mad

I know that you can fit a Holden 308 in the TA23's RA23/28's without modifying or moving any structual parts of the engine bay. And it all fits neatly under the bonnet as well.

I haven't seen it in a TA22 yet. Their engine bay's are smaller so the better option for an 8 would definatly be the RA23!

I agree about the bonnet bulge, but prefer the angled indicator lenses on the 22.

To each their own I suppose Smile

At the end of the day I don't dislike the 23s, so I'm not going to not buy one because of them... When it all boils down, it's what's underneath and inside this thing that is going to matter Evil or Very Mad

Firstly, I would love to keep up with the twin turbo stiching on the seats, but with current finances and being a male under 25 insuring it would be very very expensive(already more than it is now!). So for now when I show my mates the car and they go "wtf, is this thing twin turbo?" I just smile(thats not lying Laughing).

You cant go past the bonnet bulge though, thats like one of the nicest bits on the car, I can stand there looking at it for like 5 mins and it still looks awesome!

*edit* My TA23 is 960Kg over the weigh bridge *edit*

the cost depends a lot on condition...mods..etc etc

could range from 500.00 to anywhere.

my ta22 cost me a small fortune...and it only has one of those small rotary engines in the engine bay.

also the engineeer said he would have engineered a 400 chevy in it Smile

Alchemist,

Dude I see you are the lucky owner of Joe's old TA23. That old girl is one of the best TA23's around and I damn near slapped him for selling it so cheap. I guess its easier for me to see its value when I have been around it since Joe bought it.

Take good care of it. (Especially the GT Bits, I took me a long time to get him those)

And more importantly have fun with it Smile

As for TA22 verses TA23 I prefer the TA22. I would love to get my hands on the 1975 US powerbulge RA22 bonnet tho. Then it has the only bit I prefer on the TA23.

thetoyman75,

Thanks for the compliments Smile means alot coming from the President of Toymods. I plan on joining toymods so I can keep the car in the club, but at the moment having a spare $40 just doesn't seem to happen Confused It is a great car to drive, I love it Very Happy It has pride of place in my Garage I intend on taking good care of it, its hard to keep it as polished as the day I bought it though!
