hi. im looking at getting a 3sge and i wanna know what i can do to it before i put it in? im in brisbane so any shops that you know of in the area would be good. im thinking a port and polish as well as cryofreezing the block and pistons... anything else you guys would do to an engine that will be used as a daily driver, but also cop the weekend lead foot? also, does anyone have any good extractors for a 3sge that they dont want anymore???

Depends what the motor is like, and what your budget is like! You could pull it apart, XRAY everything, cryo treat all the parts, put it together with new bearings, rings, seals, etc., also throw in some cams and a port job - gotta ask yourself if you really want to spend the money doing this though, and if the engine needs it. Chances are you'd be able to afford a GEN4 3SGE with the money you'd spend on your old one

whoa, cryofreezing the block and pistons??
afaik cryo treatment works for parts that have been quenched and tempered, such as gear teeth, by helping transform the retained austenite that is metastable after the quench process (and is not transformed by the tempering).
afaik, it has no effect on cast iron or on aluminium, since the block is not heat treated (apart from a solution treatment when it was made), and pistons if anything are aged to give strength. but i can do a journal search for you if you are really keen.
i think there are also issues with the effectiveness of the cryo depending on length of time after heat treatment of the parts, but i will need to check on that.
a good port smoothing can help, but apart from using all new bearings, checking tolerances, getting all reiprocating and spinning parts balanced and possibly getting the rods shot peened.. you should have few probs.

heres a very good article to look at, and not too old either.
Cryogenics. The racer's edge
Schiradelly, R. Diekman, FJ.
Heat Treating Progress (USA), vol. 1, no. 6, pp. 43-44,47-49, Nov. 2001
abstract
Racing pushes engine and drive train components to the absolute limits of their durability. Extending those limits means more speed, better safety, and more races won. For this reason cryogenic processing is becoming a necessary part of the manufacturing process for racing components. This racing experience will serve as an example to manufacturing industries - now similarly engaged in their own competition against manufacturing costs and waste, and the challenge to provide high quality products with superior performance. (Sample materials: 300M steel connecting rods, brake rotors, gears, among others.)

Change the Timing belt while its out, change thermostat(original Toyota is best).
ALso take a look at the hoses and change any that are looking weak.
If you have the time then check the clutch your putting in. Replace it with a new one if you can afford it as with most turbos i'm sure they have had a hard life.
Other than that i would run the engine in for the first 1,000km.
Then its all up to you.

and another thing, its out of an old celica (1990) i think, what kind of power (kw) am i looking at? i know my 3sfe has about 87 at the engine, so how much more would the 3sge with a bit of work and some good extractors give me?
