i have a friend who has a s4 rx7 that blew the coolant seals, he then spent $6000 getting it rebuilt, with quite a few performace mods, and was still taking the car back maybe every three weeks for 4 months after it was rebuilt because something else would fuck up.
mind you, it is going well now (190rwkw), but i personally couldn't be bothered stuffing around with a wankel, lots of power from a small engine that has to be rebuilt every couple of years.

rotars are (mostly) reliable, as long as you pamper them. they're not as sturdy as most piston engines, but treated properly last quite a while making excellent power

Mazda has worked on a lot of the problems with these, they moved the ports to a different part of the engine, their theory was that along with power, efficiency and economy they would get a bit more reliability.
I'd HAPPILY take an RX8 though, awesome car.
