Got no idea what to set up, no idea about fish generally except for the ones that come wrapped in newspaper with chips.
We've got a small tank at home (I mean really small) which has got a lonely goldfish in it, I swear this thing has come back from the dead a few times and I'd be surprised if it didnt have brain damage or something.
Anyway the kids seem to like it so I thought I might get something a little bigger. What type of fish do you recommend to start off with?

goldfish - are a lot easier to look after, a little more hardy etc... but come in fairly boring varieties
tropical fish - a little more exotic but harder to look after - temperature and ph balance play a bigger factor (extra equipment include lights and heaters)
saltwater - lol don't even think about it
usually you progress through the three ranges as you gain more experience looking after fish
the fish as well as the setups also get alot more expensive... so like cars it depends on how much you wanna spend and how much time you want to spend on looking after them
if you're a newbie i'd probably recommend goldfish... a decent size rectangular tank with a few fish, gravel and good filtration
be prepared for a few fatalaties so dont let the kids name em until they're settled in

Just do what me and a mate did with his little sister....
"No...the fish isnt dead...he had a cough so we took him to the doctor..."
Meanwhile the cat was licking his paws after yet another easy meal...
Worked untill she was 5 atleast!

hey sam i got a 60cm tank with a few gold fish i am getting sick off, it has a air pump and filter, with gravel and i think about 5 fish ?
i got other tanks at my house which are warm water and its a pain in the butt when you go around to change water cause there are so many tanks, plus you either got to turn up the temperature or use another heater to keep the water constant !!
i had a 2m tank before i had sell, which had a minireef and that took ages to clean !!!
cold water fish is the easiest way to start, they don't require much maintenance except for change of water every now and then, air pump and food

Another thing
Dont spray your yard with bindy killer(and consequently the hose that you use to fill up the tank with)
I did this....and about $1000 worth of mums fish went belly up
Only one survived out of about 50!

How can you feed your dead fish to a cat??? My cat takes no interest in the fish tank at all...
When they die, I just flush em down the toilet ...
Sam, i also say go with the Goldfish... When I had them they were like $5 a fish so it's all cheap...
Cyber Punk, your mum must've been pissed off dude... One day our heater shat itself and around 30 fish died after boiling... Yes thats right, the heater shat itself but made the water a shitload hotter than it's normal temp of like 80F... So the majority of the fish died... I think maybe 2 or three survived... They were the fish that could still last in cold water, cause as soon as we realised the problem we took the heater out of the tank, flew to the fish shop and bought another one... Came back and a few more fishies were gone but yeah, about 3 survived... My dad was pretty pissed cause we bought like 4 of those electric yellow thingy's at like $30 a pop the day before ...

She was pissed off untill i reminded her that she'd been on my case to kill the bindies
Anywho i think a part of her died with those fish...she's never really gotten back into it
Then again it could of been all that money lost :/

What about crayfish?? You can get all different types these days and they look cool. You can watch then crawl around digging in the gravel, and you can give them a bit of raw steak and watch them eat it.
Also they are just about bulletproof. They'll live through anything
Something to think about

Later on if decide to go with tropical fish get some Oscar's.
They are from the same family as the Piranha.
The kids will have fun sticking their fingers in the tank
