PLEASE HELP !! 1G-GTE Thu, 17 July 2003 03:32 Go to next message
Does anyone know what the squareish bottle looking thingy (black colour) that sits in the engine bay behind the inlet manifold..that has a vacumm hose attached at the top and another hose at the bottom does ? ..is it a emission or fuel vapour holder..or anything that has to do with operating the heater ?
Cant seem to get a pic to upload...
Will try anyways...

Could be a vacum unit for the a/c controls. They are also found on range rovers that I know of, a spherical unit about 100mm across. seems to be inline with the vaccum supply to the switching mechanism. Only needed if your a/c or heater has vaccum controlled controls.

Having seen this exact item on several Toyota half cuts (including a 1G-GTE), I assure you it is a charcoal cannister! Some Toyotas also have a vac tank, but they're usually a small cylinder shaped device.

Ok guys thanks, NOW, do i need it at all..is it an important part of the 1G..or can i just do away with it for my Cressida conversion. IF i don't use it, will there be a 'warning' light of sorts appearing on the dash ?

thanks/cheers

It's a part of your vehicle's emissions system, so from a legal perspective you need it. Everything will still work properly if you remove it, but then you'll have the fuel tank breather venting into the engine bay. Unless you like the smell of fuel in the cabin, I suggest you leve it connected!
