How do i disconnect the instrument cluster?? Thu, 04 July 2002 08:22 Go to next message
Hey all,

I am currently removing my instrument cluster in my AE92 Corolla SE hatch to try and put the cluster from the SX in there instead... I have removed everything i need to get access to the instrument cluster and it's housing, but after disconnecting the housing, I can only move it forward a few centimetres.

This leaves just enough room to feel a cable or two behind the cluster and the back of the speedometer, but i have no chance of disconnecting the wiring and speedo cable.

Am i doing something wrong?
I have also taken the clear window off the front of the housing, but the fascia covering the instrument cluster itself is still connected, and is proving tricky to remove whilst the cluster is still connected.

I clearly need a bit more space to access the back, but how do i do this?

Any help greatly appreciated Smile

Thanks,
Liam.

You should be able to get up under the dash to unscrew the speedo cable! Should you not?

not.

disconnecting the speedo cable from the cluster has nothing to do with unscrewing

it is held on by a clip/tab, if u can manage to get your hand behind the cluster, run your fingers onto the top of where the speedo cable attatches to the cluster and push down on the tab, it should be a clip, then pull the cluster out a bit, when the speedo cable comes off it will give u more play/room to unplug the wiring.

Yep i figured it out, it's pretty much as Rob said.
There's a clip that has to be pushed down on the top and a clip that has to be pulled out at the bottom.

I've now discovered that I need to find a 12-pin connector plug to wire up in addition to the 3 plugs from the SE, as the SX cluster uses 4 plugs. I called the wreckers but they said they don't like cutting up their wiring looms. No one would happen to have one of these plugs spare by any chance?

Rolla Boy, this is on a SE hatch, but the instrument cluster that i want to put in is off an SX hatch. I have drawn up some tables of the wiring but i am not 100% sure on everything. If anyone has wiring diagrams/tables/photos of this conversion could they please help me out on this one? It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Liam.
