Drum brakes wearing unevenly Sun, 20 July 2003 09:05 Go to next message
Hello, just wanted to see if anyone might have some ideas on a problem my dad's landcruiser is having.

Went to adjust and check the rear drums on it today and found that they are wearing unevenly.

The top of the shoes where the slave cylinder pushes on them was worn down to metal almost. Though the bottom half of the shoe was almost brand new. It looks like its never made contact.

The shoe closes to the front of the car was worn evenly, the problem only seems to be happening on the rear shoe.

Same problem on both sides of the car also

Any ideas?

I dont know a lot about drum brakes but I cannot see how they would wear evenly. If you have a cylinder pushing out the top of the shoes against the drum, it seems logical at the top half of the shoe is going to make contact with the drum first and thats where all the pressure will be.

Want to try and sort this problem though as the brakes on this 4wd are very poor and its no supprise when the rear brakes are only making 50% or less contact with the drums.

Thanks,
Joel

thats pretty normal but not to the extent of almost new to down to metal

are u exaggerating ?

cause like i said thats normal

rear brakes only do 20% of the work so the poor brakes wont be from that....esp from drums

If it's only a single wheel cylinder then its normal to wear at the top as only the tops of the shoes are moving out. Don't know why it's only on one shoe though. If there is a cylinder top and bottom then it could be a sticking piston on one, causing more movement on the working piston and more wear.

Thanks all for this info.. Seems it quite possibly is normal.

It is only single cylinder drum brakes.. Can you convert to twin without too much work? Or would it be better just to try and convert it to disc brakes?

Here is a pic.. To me it looks like bottom is almost new and top very worn..

You could even see the bottom of the shoe had heaps of brake dust on it whereas the top had recently been worn down. In all honesty it looks like the bottom has hardly ever made contact.

if the other shoe for the same side is fine as u said then i wouldnt worry about it cause like i said most shoes wear out unevenly

front brakes are more important.... worry about them first way b4 u worry about rears .... in terms of braking performance i mean

Looks pretty normal, pity they arent symetrical so you could turn them over Smile . Early land rovers could. just go discs, Personally I've never seen a dual setup in the flesh though they do exist.

think u will find that somebody has ajusted the handbrake up at the lever or under neith instead of at the drums back off the cable and adjust them properly at the shoes than do the cable
