i have got a celica 5 speed and i was wondering if any one could tell me which one it is and what other box's are compatible with it.
all i can tell you is that it is 18" from where the gearbox bolts onto the bell housing to where the gear shifter is, so if anyone can help me in my delemer it would be much appreciated

If it's a steel-case 5-speed box and it came out of a Celica, it's a W50.

About the only direct swap I can think of is the W40, which is a 4-speed version of the same box found in a variety of Toyota's in the 70's. They're most common in RT104 Coronas and the like.

well the reason for the change is that the 5 speed has been destroyed, and i have hear that you can get a supra box that is the same length its just a matter of changing the bell housing which is no real drama do you know which supra box is the same length or any other boxs for that matter i have no problems shanging the bell housing

The w58 is susposed to be a strait swap with a different bell housing.
But they can be pricey for a decent one.
anyone verify?

I was under the impression the W50 wasn't interchangable with the W55-57-58 boxes?? Could be wrong.
What Engine is it on??

In most cases you can swap a W50 for a W58 (Supra 5-speed) with the appropriate bellhousing, however I don't think they're the same length.

In that case you will need a new (custom) bellhousing. Considering they cost a lot of money, wouldn't you be better off just getting another W50?

Yeah, I wasn't sure if he wanted to replace the whole shebang or just the gearbox itself. If it's just the gearbox, then my original comment stands; the only box he can use apart from another W50 is a W40.

w40/50/55/57/58 are all the same length
i know coz i have had a w40/w50 and w57 in my cressida
the w40/50 are exactly the same, bar a 5th gear
the w57 is completely different at the bellhousing end
you cannot put a w50 bell/h on a w57/8
the rear mount on a w57 is about 10mm different than the w40/50, but you can turn the mount around to make up this
clutch will fit inside either
other things to note are shifters arent compatible
and w57 is stronger

My brother just put a w55 in place of a w50 in a RA28.
You'll want a 21R-C bell housing and only two of the gearbox cross member bolts will line up.
With a long strip of 6mm thick steel plate on each side and six accurately positioned holes in each you can effectively remount the cross member in the right place.
The front set of holes goes only into the floor pan and the flat bar, the middle set of holes has a bolt holding the cross member onto the flat bar and them going into the floor pan.
The rear set of holes holds the cross member to the other end of the steel flat bar.
Note: you way need to put a couple of small dents in the bottom of the floor pan so you can fit a nut of the end of the rear bolts.
I hope this all made sense, but it does work, and the Transport SA inspector didn't defect us for it, so it must be alright.

Oh, I forgot to mention that the w55 gear bow would have to have the 18" extension housing rather than the 20" or the 25". If you got the other ones you'd have to do a bit of cutting to get the gearstick through the floor.
If you use the 18" one you may well have to modify the gearstick so it doesn't hit the centre console depending on what car it is going into. If it is an RA28 then this will need to be done, and no the gearstick from the w50 can not be changed into the w55/57/58.
The speedo drives are also different so your speedo will read wrong.
