R154 v's W58 differences

Anyone out there who can list the most obvious differences between an R154 and a W58? I have a guy selling a box but he's not sure what he has. It should be a R154 as it's from a JZA70 Supra with a 1JZ but i want to be 100% as he has no pics. Is there a part number or a measurement that's really obvious that i can ask him to do to confirm it's a R154?
Kinda urgent too

An easy way to tell them apart is to look at the slave cylinder. The W58 has the slave bolted to the side of the box like most gearboxes, while the R154 has a weird arrangement where the slave is inside the bellhousing.

Nah it was from an importers. The guy said it was out of a JZA70 which would make it an R154 i thought? Definitely a W57/8 though as it has the external slave cylinder.

They were after $400ish but it may have been just a W57? Miost of the importers can get you a W58 pretty easily

The slave cylinder is external on the R154 - it bolts in from behind the bellhousing, it's not an internal unit.
There are 2 inspection covers on the R154, the slave is located on the left hand side, behind the inspection plate.

The W5x series slave cylinder bolts onto the side as has been mentioned above - I dont' believe this box has inspection covers on the bell housing?

Behind the inspection plate... wouldn't that make it "internal"?

I think he means after the inspection plate if you look along the side of the box. At least that's where the slave cylinder is located on mine. It is a different setup from the W58 - from memory when I converted from 7m to 1jz we used the clutch master from the jza-70 as well - can't remember exactly why though.
I'm pretty sure my W58 had no inspection covers, but the R154 certainly does. Also $400 is damn cheap for an R154 - esp with a 1jz bellhousing. Most are $1000 plus.
Put them side by side and you'll know the difference - the R154 looks bloody huge by comparison.

I believe my first line said "The slave cylinder is external on the R154 - it bolts in from behind the bellhousing, it's not an internal unit."
Reading is fundamental Jeremy

Dave has just said a thousand words in 1 hit
I had 1 about 3 months ago, but it had an M bellhousing on it.
Adelaidejap have the JZ R154's for $1800 (bit steep if you ask me). Have you tried giving Rolin Imports a call?(www.japparts.com.au)

Yup i agree, $1800 is way too steep. It's not that flash a box. Bellhousing doesn't matter as it's going behind a 1UZ. Thanks for the tip though i'll give rolin a call

Norbie a hydra-fork or throw out bearing ect{it has a lot of names) or as Norbie put it "weird arrangement where the slave is" is used by all race cars and alot of performance cars. it is the best of the lot, but the price of them starts from about $850 and goes to about $2000. they take a bit of measuring to fit prop but they work the best. plus they keep the slave away from heat like exhast. they are the best bar none.
mick
p.s haha the r154 question has been answered already!
