Nitrogen in ya tyres? Thu, 24 July 2003 03:29 Go to next message
I heard an ad on the radio that bob jane are offering to inflate your tyres with nitrogen for better performance and less tyre wear

me thinks this is a bit of a wanky scam

thoughts anyone??

funny thread Smile to get all technical about it....

heat capacity (at constant volume) of nitrogen vs air is 0.71 vs 0.72 (kJ/kg.K) so no difference there.
from http://www.engineeringtoolbox.com/24_159.html

gas density at zero deg C.
nitrogen vs air = 1.250 vs 1.293 (kg/m^3) (same site) stuff all..

viscosity at (0°C,101 kPa)
nitrogen vs air = 1.66^-05 vs 1.71E-05 (N*s/m2) air has _higher_ viscosity (so should leak less)

also, "Valve Leakage Classifications ANSI/FCI 70-2 1976" states that for class 6 leakage (lowest leak rate) they specify using air OR nitrogen for the testing, so there can't be that much difference.

"Nitrogen benefits 'over-inflated', says RACQ" heh heh
http://www.racq.com.au/13_news/articles/20030610_N itrogen_benefi.htm

seems that the only reason to use 'nitrogen' is becuase it has a lower level of water impurity (as it usually comes in bottles)

i apologise for getting all techy, but at least ya know the facts... there is nothing between them (except the oxidation at higher temps)

There is an article from Toyo on this exact subject.

Pretty simplified, but a good read none the less Smile
