4ac water in oil woes Fri, 25 July 2003 00:14 Go to next message
I have been playing with an old 4ac over the past week, and i have stumbled across a small issue after replacing the head gasket.

# oil is watery, and gets that emulsified white paste everywhere
# water is not consumed, there appears to be no water used up, nor are there bubbles coming out the radiator
# temp guage doesnt go up much at all, nor does water get very hot
# head gets RATHER warm
# water appears to flow through the engine (can see small chunks of crap flowing into radiator)
# engine runs ok!

When i removed the head from the motor, no visible sign of BHG save for a swolen watery spot around the oil return.

Checked both the head and block for warpage - each was PERFECT with warpage less than 0.02mm, and 0.05mm is the tolerance.

I did everything as i knew to be right - cleaned the crap out of the head & block, drained all oil and water, degreased cam/rockers area, tightened head bolts in stages according to specifications in the right order...... EVERYTHING.

WTF is going on!?!?!
Do i have a cracked head or block? Is the head gasket fubar again? IS there just some leftover water in the oil and the motor is otherwise fine?

ok depending on how much sludge you are getting in the cap theres no need to panic.....yet Smile

sometimes small traces of water can collect in the PCV filter (and other places in the head) and it takes time to get out, usually there can be small traces in the cap over about 2 weeks before it totally disappears (if you wipe the sludge away every day). If you are getting LOTS of milky sludge then it may well be that the block is cracked, most likely between the bores.

Also did you change the oil filter? a lot of water gets trapped in there too, maybe thats where its coming from.

One other place that causes problems is the head. being alloy, if it hasnt had a good service history the alloy can break down, especially at the water ports (GE heads are notorious for this) , sometimes its bad enough to bypass the gasket and cause major leaks.

stupid question but are you sure its the right head gasket? If youre head is getting REALLY hot then there is definately some sort of problem, maybe the thermostat? is it opening??

gimme a call in the weekend if you cant figure it out Karl

well it appears there is a lot of sludge building up.. i might take the car to work on sunday and see how she goes over a longer drive.

Ill clean out the sludge again and see if it builds up again... i think it will becuase there was a large amount of sludge previously.
