ATF cooler question.. Fri, 25 July 2003 10:08 Go to next message
Hi all.. just fitted my tranny cooler on my JZA70 but realised when running the car that i've got the fluid flowing upwards through the cooler and not down. Its going to be a right pain to change it round now as everythings been fitted back together.

Will it make a difference, or is there so much pressure in the ATF fluid that it will easily make the journey uphill? Pic below..

Cheers
adi

WOW now thats a serious auto cooler!!!!

No issues with pressure from memory the cooler feed line is the return from the torque converter, considering the pressure side is upto 800PSI should not be an issue!

just make shure the hoses are not going to be cut, split, kinked ect ect and theres good hose clamps! one line comes off theres oil everywhere and unless you notice before it slips majorly a dead auto Sad dont ask how i know!

i would also consider a filter on the line i think its GM that make an inline filter like a fuel filter basicly.

Cheers Allan...

Yep its a bit big, but the one in the bottom of the rad has been ditched due to me fitting a manual radiator (koyo) so this will be doing the job all on its own. Hopefully its not too big it cools the fluid too much and wont drop into overdrive as a result. By the way this is the biggest you'll get away with on a JZA.. its 13"x10" fin size (pipes stick out another 2" either side) and only just fits.

I've used the hoses and clamps that came with the cooler, i dont think theres much chance of hoses popping off as they were *really* tight to fit on in the first place.. so they should be okay, although one hose i had to replace with one from a hydraulic suppliers.. rated at 400psi.. enough you think? The cooler booklet only states 150psi hoses.

The pressure used in ATF cooling lines isn't high - it's enough to go 'uphill' for you, but not stupid like 400psi, it's more like 10 (rough guess!).

Yes as above the cooler lines are only low pressure due to large volume and no restriction on the return.

as for the too much cooling issue, get a electric reserve fuel tank valve from a 4x4 place set it up to bypass the cooler and wire it into a thermo switch on the auto if needed
