Start up noise - oil issues? Sat, 26 July 2003 14:09 Go to next message
I know this topic has been done to death, but I have searched and read all previous threads.. so bear with me here Smile

I used to run Mobil Synth S in my 3sge tvis and like it, but then they changed their viscosity from a 15-50 to 10-45 or 10-something, and frankly, 10W is too runny for my older (200,000k) 3sge.

So I changed to Mobil XHP at the recommendation of my boss where I work at the servo. XHP is a semi synthetic and is a 15-40.

I don't think it works as well, but I can't really go runnier than a 15. I won't put a 20W in because of the multi-valves.

Add to this that in the mornings my car has a good rattle for a second or so, and sometimes makes a high-pitched whine for a little bit. (very bizzare methinks - cam issues?)

I have only been noticing these recently, but perhaps the cold weather + a crappier oil has exaggerated this issue.

SO

To avoid the rattle and maybe sus out this whine I was thinking of finding like a Penrite or Shell 15-50 oil. Synthetic is poss. Is this right? Any ideas appreciated dudes

cheers - Rob

high pitched whine for a few seconds and then stops?

sounds like slipping belts to me!

hmmm.. really... that would be a tension issue most likely I presume. I had the t-belt changed lik 6 months ago. suprising.

Next time it does it (only at cold early morning starts) I will try and listen to see if it is the belts

Thx man Rob

Rob, start up rattle is perfectly normal on cold/normal morning's for a second or two. It's nothing to worry about. The first VW golf GTi had startup noise from the factory.. even quotes it in the hand book!!! A lot of cars do it.

yeah but rattle = extra wear as the parts knock together yeah?

that can't be good. I am not contradicting you, 'cause I am no expert, but things knocking together can't be exactly awesome.
