RA28 Idler and Pitman arm replace

I have bought a new Idler arm and pitman for my steering because they are a little loose, but I can't get the old ones off the steering linkages. Do I need a special tool to get the buggers off, or do i just need to use brute force?
Cheers

There is a tool you can get to seperate ball joints. It's like a large wedge shaped fork.
Otherwise, a hard wack with a hammer can help.

If they are very loose and worn and old they will need to be hit very straight down while holding the other parts. this is very very hard to do sometimes and may need to be pressed out using a hydrolic press. common mech workshop equipment.
hope its a little help

A mini sledgehammer did it for us.

These parts are on a tapered shaft, meaning that they are designed to wedge themselve on when you do up the bolt. You will need to use a splitter to get them off. There is a couple of different types, one looks like a forked wedge, another a bit like a clamp with a forked end. Don't try doing it without the right equipment, you will only break something and it will cost you more money. Go to a suspension shop or your mechanic and get him to split them for you.

yeah, you could break something with brute force....but anyway,
I had a steel rod going in down through the engine bay and found someone stupid enough to hold it while I smacked it with a big hammer.
the other idea is to get a lever on it and apply a fair bit of pressure, then smack it with a big hammer, right in the side of the joint, like when you are removing ball joints.

Thankyou guys, I bought a seperator fork and got the idler arm off okay, but the pitman really is a pain in the arse. I am going to have to get a volunteer and try the pole and sledge hammer trick, lucky I kept that old panhard rod, perfect me thinks as a whacking stick.
