anyone swapped stock chaser cooler for big FM? Sun, 27 July 2003 22:50 Go to next message

I will be using the stock FMIC that came on my jzx90 chaser front cut. I was wondering if anyone had swapped from using one of these to a brand name or large truck cooler and noticed any differences?

A friend of mine has a large FMIC on his JZX100 (600x300x75).
It is a bar and plate core made here in NZ. $1000 NZ

I'm using a 600x250x75 fin and tube core from K&J on my 1JZ.
$940 NZ.

I can supply the same as my core, if anyone looked at the dyno day, 600 x 300 x 76 mm bar and plate, polished for $850, they even have threaded lugs welded on ther ready for brackets to bolt on,delivered in NSW.

you cannot fit a wider cooler into a jza70. without removing chassis rails and mounting hte bumper some other way ie. no way !!!

I'll try to get some pics.

I reckon i made an improvement of over 15 rwkw from this mod alone, also prolonged the life of my turbo's significantly. I will be retuning soon to cater for 18 psi from the stock turbs.

Very Happy Yojimbo: good luck and be carefull.

I think I would have to have the biggest cooler you can fit without cutting any body, support metal bars etc. Only thing I did was trim the support bracket for the bonnet latch.

600x300x90

But anything aftermarket would be better than a stock cooler.

Oooo-eeee! That looks purdy! I'm going to sell-off the JZX-90 cooler and go with a B&P 700x300x75. When it's all in place, I'll ley you know how it goes.

Though I'd love to follow Norbie's example of the Killer Cooler (x2 JZA80 cores stuck together).

"Good luck and be carefull" ??

not sure what that means.

But i did only say that 600 wide was the biggest you will fit obviously there is a stack of room in the other dimensions, Celi-sue, have you measured? , i dont thinka 700 mm core will go between the front bar mounts.
I might be wrong just double check.
i did have the option of much larger ie 100 mm thick core however the cost of that jump is huge. I may sell of this cooler if it turns outto be insufficient for the big single.

I know of a coupleof others with larger coolers than mine but you wont fit much more than 600 + tanks across the width available.

I was looking at getting rid of the stock intercooler and getting a http://www.hyperflow.com.au/ cooler or a Hybrid cooler.

I think they are both under $1000 for 600mm.

Still not sure, plus there isnt much room in the Soarer's front bumper for a massive cooler.

Justin,
I can guarantee that a core that big will NOT fit between the front bumper supports and the headlights. It is too wide. My 550mm wide one barely fits at all.

Yojimbo: Don't be defensive, all I was saying in that was that 18psi on stock 1JZ turbos (no matter what other mods) is risky. It's like running 500rwhp on stock pistons, sure it can be done but the one fuck up and it's game over. Knife edge performance is not my style nor is it an advisable style.

Yes 600mm is the biggest wide cooler you can fit behind a A70 front bar without cutting major metal out, no doubting that. It wasn't the width across but more the depth of the core. 90mm is pretty much the biggest you can go without again cutting major metal out.

ARE rated my cooler (which is by the way 610 x 300 x 90) at atleast 510rwkw which should be enough for even the very biggest singles you could fit on a JZ engine.

yeah I know all about turbo failures
but I am also pretty confident they will hold up too, more than 1 other 1j I know now does this on a regular basis.
That said i probably wouldnt run that kind of boost in a dyno comp. the conditions are just too extreme. A the last dyno day I ran the boost controller to just squeeze up to the 1 bar mark. On the street i usually set it to overboost well past it before settling on about 1.05 barr.

My cooler went in just nice, in the factory position, angled forward and all. Even left the overflow bottle in place !!

Hi Yojimbo,

I have measured, and 700mm *just* fits the MA-61. Anything fatter would require a LOT of massaging.

I hope to have pics within the next few weeks.

Yeah JCMF,

I should have been clearer. Rolling Eyes Core size is 600mm. I measure almost exactly 700mm total space available.

Damn thats still going to be REEEEALLLY tight. Where are you mounting it in relation to the bumper supports? Mine is only 550mm core size, and that barely fits at all.

Yep, damn tight! I do have very narrow end-tanks. Photos to come soon.

Sounds the same as *A70, space available is about 700 mm which allows for about 600mm core.
