having just taken delivery of my JZZ30, it shits me that @ under 1500rpm it has a tapping coming from under the cam cover, which disapears when revved,

is there a regular fault with the lifters in 1jz's that is easily remedied,

i have NFI having never owned a 1JZ before, the car has been sitting for 5 months and has completed 200km since delivery which should rule out the possibility of it being a sticky lifter, it also only taps once at operating temperature,

any insight to the regularity of this occuring in 1jz's and to the possible fault would be greatly appreciated

If it has about 80000 on it, i would say it needs the cam shims done.

woah...hangon before you go doing the cam shims. Most 1JZ's have very ticky injectors...if it dissapears after 1500 then nothing to worry about. Can you hear it from inside the car or with the bonnet shut? If not then its prob injectors.

I just completed installing a 1JZ GTE into a US spec 87 Supra and noticed tapping for the first week or so. Once I drove the car for a long road trip it cleared up. HTH.

mines been very tappy under the bonnet from the day I owned it (80,000kms) till now (113,000) and its still running strong. I just put it down to thats the design of the engine.

I wouldnt really worry about it. Just change the oil and filter every 5000kms, use a good synthetic oil and enjoy the beast Smile

I agree with the injector noise thoery. My JZZ30 does it too. Can only hear it outside the car at idle. Have to be close to the bonnet, or have it open to hear it though.

i have heard it in about six different 1j's .With any import motor change the all after the first 1,000 k's .Then every 5,000,
mobil 1 seems to be a little noisier .After a few oil changes the noise seems to go .In my engine the shims did not require any work and by second oil change the noise is only audible on a cold engine .Sounds more like a sludge related problem to me .

one mate tried a Nulon sludge removing oil additive with great results

To identify Injector tick verses Engine noise do the old screwdriver trick against the injector rail the injectors have a MUCH different sound
