Last weekend I thought it about time to buy that new car to modernise the fleet a little so what better place to start than Toyota!!
Out we go with the new Corolla manual Ascent Seca and we were expecting good things of which these are many, finish & fit, ride, brakes, looks OK, interior space, excellent clutch, nice seats, reasonable stock sound sys and good power.
Bad points: Buzzy vibrating engine above 4000 rpm, vibration up through steering wheel to finger tips every time revs went into the 4000 rpm + zone, high levels of noise in interior when revved over 4000 rpm and sloppy handling on rough surfaces at reasonable speed. I know the engine is a long stroke jobby, but it doesn't have to be #&^%$# harsh
The engine and handling let the package down which is a great pity I feel. Its not the power, just the ^%$$#&^& vibration and noise.
This suprises me beyond belief as any Corolla engine of the past could be revved to oblivion without getting all harsh. For 2002 this is poor.
Whats your opinion of this machine?? Did I get to drive a dud and should I try another or what???????

Heya, Got a Corolla Conquest and to be frank, that buzzing or vibration reallly reeeeaallllyyy shits me...However, the rest of the car is great, I'm damn impressed by it, all it needs is some serious buzz dampening. Its a pity this happens cos they are a great car, we've owned ours for about 5 months, no problems, and it's done a lot of highway cruising, quite a comfy and good little car...As for handling, I've seen many other cars in the same class do a lot worse...

Thanks for your reply. It confirms for me that they must all be the same. Your reply sums up the car in a nutshell. Essentially that vibration and noise is the worst problem and the problem certainly has some magnitude.

I drive these things every day as part of my job.
the AE112 was far better in my opinion. they were soft,rolly-polly,and pretty dull looking inside, but were a predictable and easy car to drive.
the current corolla is,if I had to put it in one word, edgy. the engine is less than exciting, the suspension is skippy,by no means as easy to live with as the AE112's. it's lost the progressive feel and breakaway of the previous model, and is a bit like driving inside a car with terett's (SP?) syndrome. one minute it's fine, the next it's making your life hell, then goes back to fine, without any real notice. hard to drive quickly, and stay relaxed. the interior is nice enough,a step up in design, but is designed for people under 5' 10",which rules me right out. half the time,I'm squashed down wishing I could remove my neck so I could fit in. the seats don't go far enough back either,so I need to chop myself off at the knees to get a decent grab on the pedals.
as for the noise complaints, yes,I agree that when the engine is revving hard, there's a lot of noise and a bit of vibration, but it isn't that much of a bother for me to be honest. they're a lot quieter than my sprinter...
in this price bracket, there are better options around. especially if it doesn't have to be brand new. have a drive of an N15 SSS. if you want cheaper again, but not as sporty, try an AE112 seca.
Justin...

Makes me feel better about my purchase...
I bought mine just before the launch of the ZZE121 Corolla and I didn't expect them to be any good. Well, the nice sales guy at Chatswood Toyota only pointed out to me it was the 100kW engine but couldn't tell me the torque figures or anything else.

Mmmm
Thanks for the input
I just might take a look at the SSS pulsar, checked out Lancer, what %$# they are! I am not so sure that Holden have anything too marvellous either??? I couldn't handle the lion badge anyhow!
Toyota can make a better Corolla than the current one I think. With the spoiler kit on and the factory alloys they look OK tho, well I thought so.

It has been confirmed that there will be a turbo Astra 3 door and turbo convertible. The coupe won't come here because of cost.
Well, it depends on the taste but Opel did do a good job to make a competent shopping trolley for the money.
