Oil on clutch plate Tue, 29 July 2003 13:36 Go to next message
i think i've got a lot of oil over the clutch plate i just installed due to a leaky rear main on the car i removed it off.

i'm getting a lot of clutch shudder when i take off, but not always

will this oil burn off over time, or am i going to have to bite the bullet and put a new one in???

oil on clutch = BAD

the clutch shudder you speak of is the clutch slipping due to oil on the surface.

you're going to have to take it out and CLEAN it.. or if its really rooted, buy a new one!

clean it using degreaser and solvent.

when installing new clutches i have always used solvent to clean the fine layer of oil off the pressure plate (they coat it with a smear of oil from the clutch factory to stop it from oxiding) i would also clean the clutch plate and the flywheel using a rag and solvent, then installing it without touching any of the friction surfaces with my fingers (our hands contain oil... yes this is prolly overkill but i do it this way)

have done about 7-8 clutches this way and not a single prob with any of them.
