I have heard of a 7m being installed into a RA28 before but haven't seen the car. I would think you would have a lot of problems with the length of the block. It is a fair bit heavier than the original engine.

As for the Tacoma engine, I am not sure what engine that is so I wont comment there.

The Tacoma engine should be the same as our Hilux shouldn't it?

if it is the same as a hilux, then it would likely be a 22R-E or a Y series motor.... either of which would fit into your RA-23/28 celica.

As for the 7M-GTE, i agree with gold28 - they are a substantially longer motor than the factory 18R/20R and most likely are heavier also. Consider a few other options available to you.....
An easy swap in is the 18R-G. ALthough these are rare and pricey in the states.
A value for money swap is the 1G-GTE from a GA70 supra.
A costly but quick swap is the 1JZ-GTE from a JZA-70 supra or similar.

Have a look at the articles page of http://www.toymods.org.au
there are some excellent articles on the ease of the 1g-gte transplant.

nope.. 1g-gte is pretty rare in the states ... which is why they all mod their 22r's (that and annoying pollution laws).

I'd go for a 3S or 3T. Much better engine than the old 22R and make a much nicer car than a 7M

unfortunatley no one in australia has tried putting a 5VZ into a celica as we have other engines readily available that'll swap in with less trouble...

looks like you might have to be a pioneer on this one.

what other toyota engines in the US are readily available?

i was thinking of trying to find and 18rg and have it imported ...due to the fact i prefer dohc engines.... but form what i hear thay are not too great with making horsepower i know the 5vzfe puts out 190 bhp/220 tq .. i hear it fits with custom motor mounts... but have no one that has doen it to verify it... and besides i need a gearbox with a closer gear ratio than one form a truck

hmmm there arent any small capacity RWD engines in that list

u can convert the 3S-GE and 3S-GTE to RWD but it will mean a bit of fab work as im guessing you didnt receive the SA63 celica in US. (u can grab bits from this model celica to convert a 3S to RWD)

once again i have to say looks like you'll be a pioneer with this.

Re: engine swap questions Wed, 30 July 2003 23:06 Go to previous messageGo to next message
There are companies in the US which specialise in importing engines from Japan. I know this because lots of people on Supra-based mailing lists and forums are buying JDM 1JZ-GTE's and 7M-GTE's to put it their cars. That being the case, you shouldn't have any trouble acquiring a 1G-GTE or indeed any other fairly recent engine from Japan. Sorry I can't supply you with any specific details, I can only tell you that these comapnies exist. Smile

The 1G-GTE is a 2 litre inline six, DOHC 24-valve twin turbo and intercooled. They are a JDM-only engine, and they were found in Mk3 Supras, Soarers, MkII's and a lots of other cars. Later versions had 210hp in factory tune.

hmmmm 1g is a small supra engine... do you know how much longer the 5mge or 7mge engines are compared to the 1g? the 5mge is a 2.5l supra/cressida and the 7mge is a 3.0. cause i dont think they made a 1g in the states

5M-GE is a 2.8ltre and yep they didnt make the 1G in the US, or australia but they are available at our local engine importer.

if you visit your local engine importer as norbie suggested they may be able to get one in for u, as well as a host of other JDM engines to choose from.

Re: engine swap questions Thu, 31 July 2003 00:13 Go to previous messageGo to next message
The 1G is an inline 6 cylinder, 2 litres capacity (120ci)
The 1G-gte (twing turbo version of the 1G) puts out about 200hp depending on what version.

There is heaps of info for these engines on the tech pages of this site.

I would investigate spares availibility before putting any import engine in your car. Talk to your local toyota dealership and ask whick of their branches deal with import cars and talk to them about spares.

The 1G is available in GA70 supras and GX soarers

the gent driving the 73 has a friend wiht a ijz engine and he said it fits really easy the v6 took some brain work and some fabrication for mounting... but it looks like i am goign with a 5vzfe...... thanx for your time guys

I havn't put a ruler over both the engines, but the M series block is visibly longer than the G series. You will have a fairly easy install for a G series. 1J's and 5/7M's will require either firewall mods or radiator support mods. They are also heavier than the 1G and put the weight further forward, so your handling will suffer.

Do you guys get celica GT4's or MR2 GT's there. These are great engines and worth looking into.

You're much better off with a 3S-GTE out of an MR2 Turbo or GT-Four.

If you're really interested in the 5VZ-FE, go to http://celicas.org/ and subscribe to the Old Celica Club mailing list.
There's a guy by the name of Gary M. on there who autocrosses an RA65 with a worked 300hp 22R-E who's changing it for a turbo 5VZ-FE.
Posting up a few questions there will get you a whole host of information.
