Smoking brakes Thu, 31 July 2003 01:52 Go to next message
have noticed this over the last week or so. Mainly coming home when I stop I've seen some smoke coming from the wheel arch of my front left. I passed it off as heat build up being expelled when the car stopped, as it was pretty cold. The other thing I thought it could have been was tyres rubbing against the strut, which they have a tendancy to do as they are alittle big. This morning however when I rock up to work I see a fair bit coming again from just the front left. I have proper sized tyres on the front now so that couldn't be it, and the weather, whilst not being beach temp, wasn't frigid either. I looked underneath as best I could and saw the smoke coming out from around the disk.

Is this something to be ultra concerned about? Am I due for pad replacement? The brake pedal feels hard as a rock, although there is sometimes the car has a tendancy to move around under hard braking. Any suggestions would be much appreciated

I'd take everything appart and clean it all, check for any possible oil or fluids being spilled onto the rotors/pads or traces of hub grease..

It sounds like you have a seized caliper or master cylinder. Get this seen to immediately! You don't want to muck around when it comes to your brakes.

it's gonna be one of two things,
smoke form the pads, or smoke from the oil or grease.

if the pads are dragging it's cos of stuck calipers or master cylnder as norbie said.

it could alo be whel bearing, but you would prolly feel that as well.

i've had smoke from my bearings before after hard driving (it's leak out on the discs) and also had brake fires, but if it comes form normal drivin, then somethings dragging.

kits are pretty cheap and will take you an afternoon to do. i recommend pushing the pistons out while the calipers are still connected to MS tho Wink

"Sydney Clutch and Brake" in Alexandria are usually pretty good on price and availability.

check for a seized caliper and also check that there are no sticks or anything like that jamed in between the rotor and the sheild at the back, cause it might be rubbing on the disk and getting really hot, but you dont see any smoke untill you stop cause when you are moving its allways behind you. this happened to a lady that came into my workshop, its just a thought

Placebo was pretty awesome. Most amount of goths I've seen in one place tho which was abit disturbing Laughing
Yeah, its definately something sticking somewhere. I just swapped some wheels over on the front today and while I could semi tighten the front right when it was off the ground, the front left would spin freely once it got past finger tight. I'll pull it apart tomorrow, today I'm concentrating on trying to get my silver car over the pits

yeah its a seized caliper. Took off the wheel and had a look, and the caliper wasn't moving when I put my foot on the brakes, and the wheel wasn't turning as freely as the left. Me and my dad had a quick look around, and when I put the tyre back on it seemed to rotate alittle better then before, but obviously I'm not going to drive on it Razz Good thing one of my brothers is away for a few months so I'll use his car till either I get that fixed or my other car licensed.

About how much would I be looking at to fix this myself? As in, what would cost of equipment to fix be approx.

Thanks guys

if its just a sciezed caliper slide, and its not to major, or you have to do is remove the slide from the caliper and clean and lubricate it and place it all back together
