URGENT - 1984 Supra "buyers checklist" + damage assesment ...

Im going to look at a car this evening (1984 supra) -
the g.o.
220k KM on the clock
minor left rear damage - the nice man said bumpers scratched, tailgates fine, indicator smashed and rear vent is folded ...
With these 2 factors in mind... the repair cost was esitmated $2700 so obviously its not a small scuff... but then again body repair shops tend to exagerate.. (i hope?)
Its travelled 30K in the past 8 years - leaving me to wondering what sort of driving it had in the first few years...
Apart from the obvious rust spots and conditioning... how easy should the repair to fix up?
Anything I should pay particular attention too ??
Looking to make a deal of $1500.... Everything else on the car is original spec..
thanks,

If the damage really is that minor, it shouldn't cost more than a few hundred bucks to fix it yourself. Of course if you take it to a panel shop and let them buy brand new parts from Toyota and ream you up the arse for labour, it could very well cost $2700. You'd have to be nuts to do that though.
220,000km is pretty average for a 19 year old car. Mine is closer to 250,000 and it's far from shagged, excluding the original engine of course which fell apart years ago.
You should pay close attention to the engine and transmission (if it's auto). If the car hasn't been properly looked after, both of these components can give you a lot of trouble. Of course rust is a major issue as well; remember it's easy to fix broken mechanical components, but it's hard (and expensive) to fix rust properly. Keep that in mind when you're inspecting the car.

Probably just needs a re-gas, but it could just as easily be a shagged compressor ($500+ to fix). Pretty hard to tell just by looking at it.
The main things to look at in the engine bay are:
- Oil: make sure it's clean, and especially make sure it isn't brown and frothy (blown headgasket).
- Coolant: make sure they're using proper coolant, preferably Toyota red stuff. If it's rusty and brown, beware - the cylinder head is probably mostly corroded away. Also look for oil, another sign of a blown headgasket.
- Cams/rocker gear: peak inside the oil filler and look for telltale signs of overheating (ie cooked oil, discolouration etc).
- Radiator: look for corrosion, check the condition of the fins; if they flake off easily you're up for a new radiator ($400 or so).
Of course you should start the engine and listen carefully for any signs of trouble. If you're not confident in your ability to spot a dud, take a qualified professional with you; it's well worth the money.

the usual spots, for rust - all through the tailgate.
be sure to remove the little plastic bit on the inside to the end of the hatch - this is the best way to check for rust/repairs to this area.
also, check inder the rubber seals of the doors - water can tend to collect on the plstic bit under these and rust them (like mine)

other than that... check for paint condition. the main reason I love my supra is that the paint is nearly perfect all over. beware different spray colours, fading, or flaking.... resprays are *really* expensive.
also, budget for a 7m/1j/2j conversion. I definitly recommend it

oohh, another 1jz ma61
the digi dash works fine, except the tacho will need a signal booster (but that's the same for the analogue dash as well - it's a 5m/1jz thing)

Well the heating element works... its the air conditioning that has packed it in... I've yet to determine the cause...
I also found a small tear in the hatch seal.. and I havent had the chance to really look at any prices.. but if anyone knows of some spare rear lights please let me know...
Suprisingly the diff didnt even make a squeak on a power shift... which is strange or good.. it could just be my unadjusted ear...
It has a whopping big pod filter ... larger than i've ever seen... looks like something outta a truck ?? Can anyone clarify this is a stock item? It fits nicely in a half open air box ... drivers side..
Acceleration is a little slow at the moment.. but i cant expect too much with 220K on the clock..
Thanks for all the help... I shall be purchasing my membership to ToyMods as soon as it lands in the garage !!...
THE BEGGING OF THE END....

Also one thing that really worried me was a 1cm soak line.. looks too be oil or possibly petrol under / around the fuel inject manifold... ?
sorry for being so vague... will uploads pics over the weekend.. but for now I pray that its only a broken seal and not a headgasket....
hmmm.... fluid change... where to start...

I take it it's purchased then.
if not, just remember ma61 parts are hard to come by.
There's a bloke in castle hill called ray, a mk2 fanatic, and he's got loads of spare parts in his garage.
I know for a fact he's got at least 3 tail lights for each side. I'll give him a call if you like.

Another thing to check is to see if the blower inside the car works at all speeds, AUTO, low medium and high. if the low doesn't work, your blower resisitor is suffed like mine but i was able to get it working, ask Wilbo666 for tips... See if the car is fitted with the LSD, some of the cars I have seen have the RA65 Diff fitted and proclamed a "LSD" Diff when someone did the dirty and changed them over...
Good luck anyway...
Cheers.

By that you'd be hinting that the parts are interchangeable.... Marvellous...
Thanks for the subtle re-direction, most appreciative...

Don't take this the wrong way dude... but I know your car pretty damn well - and shagged is definitely one of the words I'd apply to it. Yes it's fast... but that's about it!
The shocks are shagged, the springs are shagged, the bushes are shagged, the bodywork is a bit rusty (shagged), the LSD's shagged, the ring & pinion are COMPLETELY shagged, you've had to get the rediator recored (because it was shagged) the aircon has been redone (because it was shagged) the brakes have been completely replaced (because they were shagged), the power steering rack is/was shagged....
I'm not saying that this is not the case on every car of the age... but 9/10 Mk2's are definitely shagged
As an aside, there are a set of Supra-looking tail lights in a Celica at ABC Wreckers in Oxley.

Not sure if you've bought it yet, but this is another very nice looking(from photos anyway) MA61, and with new, shocks, tires & reco'd power steering rack its probably a damn nice car. Thats another thing to check, the power steering rack, make sure its not oozing too much fluid. But thinking about it another way, if you bought the MA61 your looking at for $1500 and then got it repaired, you might be at the same place or cheaper, just food for thought.

Leigh: get stuffed. The car is 19 years old so you can hardly expect it to be in mint condition, however that doesn't mean it's shagged. The fact that it drives every day and has never let me down, even after two major interstate trips recently, is proof enough of that. Now tell us about YOUR Supra!
