AE86 light switch

I am having dramas with the headlight switch on the dash of my aus-spec sprinter. I have talked to a few guys up here (Newcastle) that say it's a reasonably common problem. The problem is as follows:
1. The lights used to swich on and off ok, but the dash lights were intermittent.
2. Percussive maintenance (ie bashing the dash) used to solve the problem.
3. It occured more and more frequently, with the bashing having less effect.
4. Now there is no dash lights whatsoever on switching on the lights, but the headlights are fine.
5. All other dash lights are ok (ie fuel, oil, indicators).
6. Illumination of the centre cluster (ie vents, etc on centr console) do not come on.
I have checked what I think is the obvious stuff (ie fuses) and have taken the dash apart to have a 'butchers look' and all the globes are ok. So it looks like it's the switch.
Anyone else had this problem? Are the switches easy to replace (in terms of availability)? The wreckers have none and reckon that there isn't a compatible model that will fit (I thought the AE82 had a similar set-up). Is there a part number that Toyota will need if I buy it new? Or is this a more sinister problem requiring the services of an auto electrician?
I have bugger-all mechanical and electrical knowledge (just basic common sense), and I am armed with minimal tools (a few screwdrivers, spanners and one of those 12V testers).
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Avoid driving at night
Nah seriously, if common sense has prevailed, and you have eliminated everything else to the switch, then it must be the switch. But replace the main globe, replace 'tail-light' fuses in both fuse boxes, and replace any dodgy wires/connections.
I've never heared of this problem in a sprinter and i don't think it is common, but the lights on the centre air-con console not working is a common prob, usually the globe.

I had this problem on my Sprinter, it was the actual light switch itself. The dimmer part of it was causing the problem.
I pulled it out and bridged the wires for the dimmer, so now the dimmer doesn't work and always on full brightness.. But at least it all works!

you COULD do that...
OR you COULD go to a wreaker and get another similar style switch!
or get a washer switch and wire up a remote dimmer.. ot hard
and yes.. very common prob.
you can have mine for 10 bucks if you want it?

Happened to me too. Can bend to sliding contact a bit more so it makes better contact, worked for a couple for weeks for me.
Or just solder it up.

I had this problem as well and it could be possible that the lights arn't earthed proberly. Because that was the problem of my lights. Also it couldbe some broken wires?
Hoped it helped

Heh, Ive had this problem too... got worse and worse then I read elsewhere on the forums that its the 4 solder points for the two wires that are in the switch...
Apparently the soldering joints wear out or sumtin, anyways just resolder them (with new wire) and away you go
Worked for me!
