brake pedal feel... Thu, 31 July 2003 03:12 Go to next message
was just speaking with a brake man, i was enquiring about getting my brake master cylinder rebored with a larger piston and he reckons a bigger piston wont make the brake pedal feel harder, but actually make it feel softer. is this true?

ive gone from standard RA40 brakes and put in a freshly rebuilt set of RT132 struts, discs and calipers and the pedal has felt a little too squishy for my liking.

i have put up with it, and now that my brake master cylinder is due for a re-seal im thinking i'd like to do what i can to have a harder feeling pedal.

do i have any options? - keeping in mind the GA70 master cylinder is a no go, the RA40 cylinder is a 2 bolt unit.

Have you considered getting a smaller brake booster from some other Toyota (eg TA22)?

poor brake man, i feel sorry for his clients Rolling Eyes

a bigger master cylinder pushes more fluid, and will not go down as far to push fluid into the calipers. thsi also decreases the caliper/MC ratio, so it will also be harder to push, and feel more firm.

squishy? there's no air in the lines?

what's the difference in piston area between the RA40 and RT132 calipers? if the 132's are say.. 20% bigger, then you'll need approx 20% bigger area MC to regain the same feel (a bit less since rear brakes are still same)

hope this helps.

nahh no air, brakes were bled thouroughly.

anyone know of a bigger bore toyota 2 bolt master cylinder i should check out?

RA40 single piston
RT132 twin piston split caliper so id say double piston area.

Replace the rubber lines with nice braided ones and a stainless steel sleved master cyl should feel much better

You COULD always rip the hose off the booster Evil or Very Mad (kidding!)

But this sounds like a rather interesting brake person....

Your pedal should not feel squishy, that means there is air or the MC is rooted. All these units do is displace the fluid and brake fluid is designed not to compress so they shouldn't feel soft. Incorrect MC/caliper ratio would result in a pedal that is active right at the bottom or the top.I think if you replace the MC (put new rubbers if you are confident) and it should be OK.

A rebuild kit wont help a master cylinder if the bore is stuffed. You may need to get it sleeved or find a better one. It will be cheaper to find a better one but you cannot tell untill you pull them apart.
