Hey everyone,
Im new to this forum as i just bought myself a 85 sprinter yesterday! Its a aus spec sprinter so naturally a new engine will be transplanted very soon! I just need a few suggestions on what sort of engine i should get! I have been looking at a 100Kw Red top 4age! As it has enough power! Im not really into the 4agze and 20v 4age! due to insurance purposes! I also wanted to run the red top off twin 40 dcoes webers! as i am a carburetor type of guys and love the sound, and also found that its alot easier to install than the efi ecu! I have about $2500 to spend on a engine convesion! any suggestions about other setups would would b alot of help! thanx

Carby redtop!!!!!
Good on ya mate!!!!!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok seriously, it is good to see you wanting to do something different, ie. carby an efi engine, and not wanting to put a 1jz or something rediculous like that.
However don't bag out the 20V as an insurance problem...... as I can not see it being more of a problem than the 16v.

Check out these links on conversions!

$2,500 may not get you far unless you do the work yourself!
Good luck finding the goodies like LSD diff and a 20 year old engine which hasn't been thrashed!
Anyone got a spare 4AG crank which isn't cracked?! Anyone?!

Thanx for the help guys!
I went down to my mates b4 (he will b doing the conversion)
he has convinced me to go with the 4AGZE. Its a bit more money and hassel but he recons the end result is alot better than a 4age runnin carbs. My mate will b doing the conversion but not the wiring ill have to leave that to a pro. I am located in caroline springs (just past deerpark) western suburbs, in melbourne. thanx for the offer screema. I will just b needing little bits of advice like a good auto electrician to do the job for me! or if i can get the ecu setup without goin with a auto electrician would b good and save alot of $$$.
Ill keep u all posted.
thanx alot for the help guys.

Just in case you do want an LSD you can get them, just need to do some work and pay the dollars. And it would help to have a mate overseas to ship it to so you can get it later:

Of course the Initial D wallet is cheaper.........

you dont wanna keep them honest. you want to send them home wimpering, with their tail between their legs
and I definitly agree with your mate. if you're going to the trouble of doing a conversion, you might as well stick a GZE in there and have a lot to show for it at the end

Hey im a p plater, but then again i dont drive a bombadore!
Well my mate is goin to lebanon in about 2 weeks so he rekons that he cant start the conversion till he gets bak in 4 months! but i wanna get it done asap! so he suggested sum conversion place in elsternwick(i think thats how u spell it) he dosnt know the name but hes gonna find out! he recons that they do an excellent job and are very good price.
I recon it would b alot better to do it myself especially if its gonna save me the $$$, but i sorta need someone doing it with me that knows what they are doin!(as i dont).
but still ill give them a buzz and get a quote on monday!
anyone else know of a good place to get quotes from in victoria?
thanx

any suggestions of what i should do? i really wanna do it myself but im lost! and my old man is more woried about insurance prices than helping me do the conversion( and he is a fitter and turner for christ sake) so if i need anything made like brackets and stuff he should b able to do it!. The budget has also increased to about $3000!

3k won't exactly get you far with a 4agze conversion... as the engine halfcuts themself cost around 1900-2400 matters
theres a website from guy in QLD who put the 4agze into his ae86,
but basically you need to make the fuel deliver to the EFI engine, basically a efi pump, possible surge tank matters how you want to do it...
wiring the car up will cost around the $500 mark, unless you can get it done cheaper..
I'll be doing this conversion after i buy a nice sprinter and have budgeted around the $4500 mark for it all, doing the work myself, with the pully kit and a nice FMC, and extractors and 2.25inch exhaust, and a heavy duty clutch
with the lsd, you can get a jap spec rear end, get a commodore, or R31 LSD rear end, and cut it and weld it up so it fits, you can do this for around the $1500 mark, theres a place in sunshine that will do this no probs, but i'll just weld it up untill i blow it up then i'll put something better in there...
thats what i have planed kinda at the current moment, and a few more ideas that i have on paper... the install doesnt look dificult but i'm not doing it till exams are over in november

A carby redtop will cost you a fair bit, just in parts.
I'll try to outline the basic costs, if i've forgotten anything someone can remind me.
High Comp 4AGE Short Motor 700
Redline Inlet Manifold 200
2 x 40mm webers 1200
4 x Ram Tubes 150
4 x Filters 200
Linkages 200
Electric Fuel Pump 100
4-2-1 Extractors 250
Basic Exhaust 250
Custom mechanical advance
electronic distributor 400
Total 3500
That's the very minimal, you still need reroute the water lines. A clutch, depending how much meat it's got left, but a good chance to change it while the engine is out. Most likely the jetting that comes in you carbs won't suit the 4AGE, and unless you've got a box of jets it's gonna cost you a fair bit to get running right. I spent 400 on new jets, luckily my venturis and aux venturis were spot on, they are very pricey.
O yeah, forget about insurance, not having any pollution gear kind of makes your car illegal. Lay low and don't attract too much attention. If you really want a quick car that is insurable i'd look to upgrading the suspension before you touch the motor side of things. I've seen a 4ac powered sprinter with suspension mods keep up with a 4AGE powered car that had stock suspension.

They seem ok to me to deal with, but I have only ever got parts etc and not got them to do anything like a conversion. Get a quote of them though and go down their and have a look at any work they are currently doing or have done.

well i just got bak from toyo spares, i went down earlier 2day as i finished uni early! The guy quoted me $5500 for a gze conversion! WTF
The place looked ok but i would rather take a chance and do it myself then spend $5500 on a conversion.

For that sort of money that would want to include the price of the front cut and all the bells and whistles.
You can't loose giving it a go yourself, you will learn heaps and if you get stuck you can get someone else to just get you past that hurdle and continue. If you didn't glue your fingers together building model cars when you were a kid you can't exactly really butcher a conversion such as this one.....

Well i had a chat with my friend about the price of the conversion. I have decided to wait till he gets bak from lebanon and let him do it. So i can still save up a bit while hes over there and can do a bit more when it comes time for conversion, like brakes and suspension. The only thing is i have to wait 3 and a half months till he gets bak
but its worth the wait as its only conna cost me about $3000 for the whole conversion. thank god for friends.
