icon9.gif  My baby doesn't like starting cold.. Fri, 01 August 2003 15:52 Go to next message
Hi guys,

Ever since I've had my '89 Celica SX it hasn't like cold starts (first start of the day, in either winter or summer).

It seems like the engine needs to turn over a couple of times and then it'll go, so I usually have to have 2 cracks at it.

I thought it might have been the battery, but the car starts fine when it's hot.

Next I thought it might be the plugs, but I've changed them and still no change.

I've also checked the air filter, but it was pretty good.

Any ideas why it would start perfectly when warm, but not very easily when cold?

To try to sum it up a bit, all the parts in your engine have close tolerance fits, and they're designed to fit best when it's all at operating temp, which is quite hot. Because the metal expands when it's hot, it doesn't actually fit very well when it's cold, which is also why you'll hear people say things like "90% of engine wear happens in the first 5 minutes of running".
Try using a thinner oil for winter, & go back to something a bit thicker for summer. I normally use 25w-70 for summer & 15w-50 for winter, but my motor uses a bit of oil so I go a bit thicker than normal.

My carby 4af does that...

I just give it two squirts of gas then start it...

Don't know if it works on EFi cars though Smile

Aye, it does work on EFI cars...my '93 SE Corolla doesn't like the cold either (although it doesn't always start first time even when it's not cold, heh...need to get that checked out), but a really short tap on the gas while it's turning over does the trick every time. Smile

mine has no problem starting, but it has a little rattle on me which I hate. I use a 15-40 but will change to a 15-50 I think (but is this bad for multi-valves)

They seem to be a bit this way - I think it's when the cold start injector gets antisocial. It seems to be that if you crank it a little bit the first time (say 2 seconds), let go, then crank again, it'll start straight up on the 2nd crank, regardless of how long you crank it the first time Evil or Very Mad

mrshin, that's exactly what happens.. it always starts the 2nd try. I tried some spitfire (or whatever it's called) to clean the injectors, but it made no difference. Sad
