CLUTCH ISSUES

Hi Guys,
I need your knowledgable expertise. I have issues with my stupid clutch in my MR2. Its a new HD Exedy import clutch made specifically for a 1996 3SGTE MR2.
My problem is when I turn the engine on, I cannot put it in gear but I can change gears when the engine is off though. If I select a gear, then start/crank the car, it will go. However when driving I cannot change gears properly. When travelling at about 50km/h in 2nd, sometimes I can put it in 3rd or 4th, but its REALLY hard and i have to force it. Putting it back into 2nd or 1st is impossible.
I have bled the hell out of the thing. I have also changed the whole secondary slave unit from the 3SGTE gearbox to the 3SGE clutch unit and its still doing the same thing.
What can be my problem?
Is it the slave? the Master? Not bled enough? Wrong installation of clutch? Fork? I am lost now and its getting on my nerves coz Im hanging to unleash my new found power.
Please help
Dave

Are you sure you put the clutch plate in the right way round. It sounds like it isn't disengaging enough

Agreed. My clutch was behaving the same way when I put the clutch plate in backwards.

The springs in the clutch plate were slightly damaged from grinding against the flywheel bolts. Apart from that it was all good though; I just turned the clutch plate around the right way and it all worked fine.

Hi Norbie,
Just found out that i did put the clutch plate in the right way. I checked on my old 3SGE and there is no way the plate will sit right if put in backwards. The springs knock the flywheel bolts tooo much..
So yaeh.. Thats not my problem..
Wat do u reckon?

Are you sure that the clutch arms are the same? It may be that the clutch you are using requires a different arm to move it more.

not to be patronising but have you re-adjusted it to account for the last clutch being worn and not having as much tread and the new clutch sticking out more. it just sounds like it isn't disengageing properly.

Hi Guys,
Ok heres the latest. I went home at lunch today to check it some more. I know the clutch is in the right way. I started the engine, got my dad to push the clutch pedal down and change gears after I got a crowbar to push the fork further. I can push a further 7-10mm beyond how muich the 2ndary slave rod is pushing it. When I push it further, my dad can change gears..
From this is am guessing a few things..
- Both my 3sgte and 3sge 2ndary slave units are dead
- My master cylinder is dead
- Theres a hole in the piping thus causing air pockets all the time. have bled it soo many times to eliminate air pockets.. But they keep coming back.. HAve been through more than 500ml already...
U think one of these are the problem?

Maybe the clutch fork has slipped/been pushed off it's ball? Maybe when you were reinstalling the box. This would cause a dramatic change in the geometry. I definitely think that it is NOT the bleeding of the system. You have checked that path a few times, it is time to look elsewhere.
The last time that I put the clutch disc on backwards it undid all of my flywheel bolts laugh now, but not at the time

could putting a clutch disc in backwards cause a squeeking noise when engaging a little like a fan belt slipping?

In my case, it made a very unpleasant loud grinding sound. A squeaking noise would probably be the throwout bearing.

I recently had this problem with my Cressida 1GGTE conversion, used the slave and master clutch pumps from the Supra including the pedals. Couldn't engage gears. Finally found out that the pedals hit the floor sooner than the GX60 ori would. So went back to original GX60 setup , WORKS FINE NOW. So in your case, check for air/oil leaks at the slave pump and master pump.It might actuall be some small adjustment somewhere.
cheers

thanks for all your help.
Figured out that everything was ok.. I just had to adjust the clutch pedal to be REALLY REALLY high... feels weird now coz it sits about 5cm higher than the brakes..
But at least i can drive the baby
