loud clunk on startup

twice now in the past week when I've started my car, I've had a really loud *clunk* from my engine, the car shudders, and it starts fine. Ant ideas at all on what this could be? my first thought was oil starvation after the old pac highway cruise, but the oil is still full.
Maybe it's related to my cluch bearing issue, although the car was in neutral with the clutch out when I started it.
cheers

Any smoke during or after the shudder?
is timing at right spot or advanced a bit too much for this cold weather?
engine mount kersnappen?
if in neutral and clutch out, then perhaps gearbox is embarking upon path of self-transformation/destruction?
Charles.

it doesn't do it while the starter is cranking, so that rules out the gearbox (i think). no more smoke than usual on startup (that is to say, a little bit of oil, and a bit more fuel)
