petrol?
um, i think with concern to rego, you don't have to pay it until it runs out, as you would if the car was yours

there is a transfer fee, not sure what it is though, or how to work it out. but i think its dependant on the price of the car..
ie, more money spent, bigger the transfer fee...

yeh thats as much as i know bout it too ! aha
yeh rego is a factor because if u buy a car with 1 mths rego, you will be up for rego (and pink slips) the next month... u know what i mean ... but yeah its not an immediate cost

Transfer fee on a used car is 3-4% from what I remmeber.
That was for a $3k car, not sure if it goes up in percentage if the price of the car is higher.
I though with new cars, with the introduction of the GST they got rid of luxary tax. But I think that only applies to cars over $50k.

the 'transfer fee' you guys are talking about is stamp duty, 3% from memory...
just get the guy you buy the car from to give you a reciept with a VERY low sale amount on it - like $1000...

I was thinking that Ed - but will the seller generally be willing to do that for u ?
I guess as long as you have a contract that states the cost price etc then that would be sweet yeah ?

you can only ask
most folk ive ever spoken too are happy to do it - no harm to them. i got one guy to give me two recipts once - one high and one low - the high one so i could sell the car again later, and say - 'well this is what i bought it for bud' ... hehehe
more importantly, hell also need to fill out the disposal notice (on the back of the cars rego papers) with the low amount... the rta will simply look at the disposal notice when you go registering the car, and they use that number to calculate the stamp duty...

the duty that you pay is based on the dutiable value of the car plus a transfer fee... it is $2 for every $100 to the value of the car plus a $16.95 transfer fee.
Generally people that pay cash for cars will put a lower dutiable value on the form otherwise the cost skyrockets.
I believe it cost me $36.95 at the RTA place for my $3500 TA22..... you do the maths

Basically if the car is registered, you only have to worry about a transfer fee (I just did one, it was $25 or something) and then stamp duty is a separate fee, that is 2% of the dutiable value.
No need for a greenslip or rego if the car is just being transferred into your name, as this comes with the car.
The dutiable value is the price that the car is worth on the open market or the price you paid whichever is higher.
This means that if you bought a $100k Ferrari for $250, you pay 2% of the $100k figure, not the $250
Technically misrepresenting the value is fraud and you can AND WILL go to jail for it if caught out. Do so at your own peril.
Also note that it can cause issues with insurance payouts if you officially purchased the car for next to nothing. Some companies will only pay you the purchase price of a car.

im not sure this is true
its 2% stamp duty - which is based on purchase price
you could be right, but ive NEVER seen the rta lasses check the market value on ANY car i have transferred ownership of after a sale. ALL they have calculated the stamp duty on is the price on the disposal notice...
and as far as a private sale is concerned, how on god's green earth is anyone going to prove that you didnt pay price x for a vehicle??

As I said, that's not relevant. If you pay $1000 for a car because it's from a mate and he owed you some favours, but it's really worth $5000... then you have to pay stamp duty on the $5000.
I'm not saying it's fair, but that's how it works.
If I've learned one thing, it's don't f_ck with the government.

Be VERY careful doing this...When we initially bought the Cressida and transferred the rego (ACT), I showed the "teller" the receipt for $5K and she says "Yes, but we will charge you on the market value (approx $7K)...Needless to say, I said something along the lines of "Yeah, right!" (and we paid on the receipt value).
They will try and charge you on the higher of the 2 values...
