7M-Brisbane, fair enough you have never had a pleasant experience with a mechanic but that does not mean we do not know what we are talking about, i take great offence to that. ask a true mechanic how hard their job is cause i can assure you it aint easy. sure any grease monkey can change oil and do services all day but when it comes to diagnosis it can be VERY difficult. i assume you will be the only one to work on your car from now onwards.

Agreed... I am an aprentice and I find some jobs really hard, especially diagnosis and electrical shit...
We do all the hard work on ppl's cars cause they can't do it and then we have to listen to all this shit about that we don't know what we're doing... If you don't trust mechanics, then do everything yourself... And when you fuck something up, try a diagnosis job and try to find the problem and fix it, some things aren't as easy as they sound...
Brad, with the 2REVUP MR2, would know what I am talking about... After doing something to his car, there was an electrical short and it is now waiting to be fixed by a professional... I am in no way saying that Brad is an idiot or that he doesn't know what he is doing, I am simply stating the fact that when something goes wrong, it's much easier to take it to a pro...

Well, it's certainly been interesting having 2 modified cars in the garage over the last year or so...I've gone from not doing much (at all!) on my cars, to doing the minor stuff (oil changes etc) up to trying more advanced stuff (swapping a diff etc).
I'm still learning (and basically I still have to get big jobs done by others due to lack of tools, knowledge, space etc), but I am getting there...
I only generally take my car to one place (the same blokes who put the engine in the Cressida for me), but I'm taking it there less and less, because I'm "taking on" more and more of the jobs myself...
I'll never be a complete DIY'er (lack of time/motivation prevents this) but I am getting the basic idea...

come on now - Allan gets paind QUite well , so his bookkeeper told us !
Anyway - if you cant do it yourself - i guess the only things to do is find someone who seems " enthusiastic " about your car if its special , or buy a workshop manual !
I know sweet F all about my Gt4's internal bits - but seeing the service is coming up - ill be getting a friend of mine to work on mine that at least has had some dealings with AWD turbo cars ( mainly wrx's ) and that has done work on my dad's supra ..
greasy's and oils ill probably end up doing myself - though ill leave the finer tuning to someone who actually knows what to do + has the right equipment ..

the only problem I've had so far that I couldn't fix myself was this f#$^2n turbo timer, which sideshow is doing for me (as soon as I get around to calling him).
as for mechanics, depends where you live/how much you love your car.
for basic stuff, I'd take it to CMN Motors (for CNM, one of those) in gladesville. The guy's name is mario, and he does top notch work (even if he does look like a dodgy little italian bloke). nice guy too.
for anything else, I'd go to advan. expensive sure (they are a performance shop afterall), but I've heard nothing but good stories from them.
or you could get rod at SAS to look over it, tho I hjave heard a horror story or 2 about sas
