Help with getting an AE86...

I have liked sprinters for a while now, and my VB commodore seems to be losing its edge(!), time i went buying.
Im thinking of spending around 6k, and naturally aspirated (4A-G)is fine.
Problem is, i know not what to do.
I know Aussie stockers are considered the ugly sibling of the japanese import but is it worth waiting for an import/tricked to go on sale?
How much is it going to cost to bring an aus up to a good standard?
Is it worthwhile importing one, i have heard some different things about costs (talk 3k to 9k to you can't do it at all.)
So what are my options, and what is advisable?

have around 11k on hand for a jap spec.
it has been said time and time again
if you want to spend lower you can buy it, yes its possible, but the thing is it won;t be a decent car most likely rust, damage, drift car etc.
having 10k on hand can get you a decent imported one to australia with shipping costs.
the aus spec is not the ugly sibling of the jap spec, in fact they came out like that in japan the same model just different specifications in parts.
if you wanted a 4age aus spec sprinter you could pick up one for around 4.5-6.5k around there, with some goodies on the side. You would know where its been and at least check its condition
all up to you. just remember its a cult car japaneses are willing to pay more then what you would for a good one, its jus crazy.
well up to you what you want to do.
